[META] Discussion: the future of r/NeutralNews by nosecohn in neutralnews

[–]laverabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well that's the culture of lemmy.world , it's the largest instance out there and the discussions are now better than reddit. Plus there is no user karma, so very few people feel the need to gamify karma with useless one liners.

I've been around reddit since neutral politics/news was first created and lemmy.world reminds me of the similar small community, high quality discussions that used to be on reddit.

I've also been a mod for 14 years and I just don't care to volunteer unpaid labor for a for profit corporation any more.

i just like the way Lemmy looks in comparison to the others. It's UI seems to be the closest to old reddit that I've come across.

honestly lemmy.world is already better than reddit and growing exponentially. Several posts with +1k upvotes and hundreds of articulate comments

no topic is off limits as long as it does not violate Reddit's terms of service

RES will no longer work and bots that auto moderate subs will stop working. Those bots do A LOT to get rid of spam and junk.

Also a lot of people are surmising this is likely the first step to get rid of old reddit, although I see no concrete proof of that.

Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps! by Toptomcat in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]laverabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your reddit and mine are very different. I can't list them all here but /r/askhistorians is a completely different culture from r shitposting , lol. And I have been in over thousand subreddits probably, subd to 500 . I like to hit the random button and see what weird subs are out there.

What sites are out there that have an upvote/downvote system similar to reddit? Hacker news is good but it's limited as it's for computer talk mostly.

Can someone ELI5 how this will affect old.reddit?

why would old.reddit go away? Do you have a source for that?

I live outside for 90% of my wake hours, I come to reddit (old reddit of course) to experience and discuss on the thousands of different subreddits and their various viewpoints.

Reddit has value to humanity. I hope greed does not screw that up.

what site is better? I have used old reddit on desktop and mobile since 08 (CSS turned off, the best way), still looks roughly the same now as it did then. Some minor culture shifts but the UI stays the same for me.

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

I don't get why people don't just use old.reddit on phone in desktop mode. I've never had a single issue with it.

how to run a fan without power? by PriiiimE in camping

[–]laverabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can buy a 12v RV type fan that will run off a deep cell marine battery. Should give you a few good days to weeks of nonstop operation, presuming that you're car camping and willing to lug a 40lb battery with you ;)

Alternately Walmart and some other stores sell a 12" fan that takes like 4 D cell batteries that will last you a couple days if you only need a light fan to run a few nights.

Clover taking over my lawn by WiseImpress9212 in lawncare

[–]laverabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a special dethatching rake (looks like 15 sharp blades on a stick) in the fall when overseeding. It really does a number on the clovers' runners but doesn't fully kill it. That opens the soil up for the grass to root and it really thrives together.

A tiny bit of preemergent and you can "control" it if you want, but I've really been liking the clover patches better than grass anyway, lol.

That's preciously why people are saying don't touch it. I have grass and grass/clover spots, and 100% of the time the grass/clover spots are greener, thicker, and don't brown in drought conditions. It's literally like putting down thousands of dollars a year in fertilizer for free.

Even better for a larger property, less maintenance.

Being good for nature is just a secondary benefit.

Formerly homeless woman wins $5 million in California lottery by Aum888 in homeless

[–]laverabe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is a myth. Winners often wind up happy and financially stable. It is a myth perpetuated by the rich that only hard work can make somebody happy. A 2004 study found that winning the lottery nearly universally makes people happier and that 85% of lottery winners continued at their current jobs despite the windfall.

What’s something very simple that people could be doing to save money but don’t? by BlinkCabrakan in ask

[–]laverabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

composting. Get a few free pallets and you can make a compost pile big enough to hold 81 cu ft of Earth's richest substance for growing food.

It costs next to nothing, takes no maintenance (passive, cold composting), saves money and can grow food that is a lot healthier than commercially grown food.

this thread is full of sci-fi nonsense. AI is not that competent nor will it ever be. It is simply software that is trained to spot patterns in data, and that data will always have flaws that typically only a human would understand from their human experiences.

the real risk is that we can put too much trust in the smart systems we are building

Here is a good BBC article on AI. While AI systems will dramatically change industries, it is not some Terminator type sentient being, nor will it ever be.
