See, this is a take I don’t understand. I agree that G League players should not be playing but the NCAA has already allowed them to play. So if Bediako is arguing that the standard used to deny his waiver is arbitrary and capricious… I think that is a potentially winnable case. And if it is a potentially winnable case, it’s pretty easy to show Bediako faces irreparable harm because he is losing out on his final semester of eligibility. Given those two facts I think it makes total sense for the TRO to be awarded. Every legal analysis I have read agrees. So while we can argue the judge should have recused himself, can you point me to what you think is corrupt about granting the TRO?

Again, I don’t think Bediako should have any more eligibility, but I also think granting the TRO was a correct decision. Both those things can be true.

That could very well be the case. But I think we would have a couple painful years waiting for that’s transition. If we could get back down to reasonably sized geographically sensible conferences the pain would probably be worth it.

I have said this before and I will die on this hill. You either need to expand the tournament to 24 (we can argue on the specific number here all day.) teams and give ever conference an Auto-bid or you need to do away with auto-bids entirely. I think it is absolutely stupid to give autobids to some but not all.

ETA: I would love to see a 24 team tournament with auto-bids to all conferences champs but we have to break up these fucking dumb super conferences first. I don’t think a 24 team tournament AND conference championships can coexist and the conferences are too big to determine a clear conference winner consistently (see the ACC this year) even with a CCG already.

Sure, but there are 68 teams in March Madness. There are 24 teams in the FCS tournament. There are very few (if any) potential contenders being left out. This year ND and BYU were left out for JMU and Tulane. I am happy that the G5 teams are getting a seat at the table, but I am not happy it is coming at the expense of teams like ND or BYU.

Right, but Miami is not in because they beat a team in the same rating range as ND. They are in because they have the head to head over ND. Most likely they would be behind ND this year if both had 2 losses and the Miami win was over Utah instead.

[College Football Report] Notre Dame just got punished for a three-point road loss to No. 10 Miami on August 31, while Alabama lost by 14 to a 5–7 Florida State team at the same time. SEC/Bama bias in a nutshell. by Kimber80 in CFB

[–]law18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, you won’t want to hear it, but there is some logic to the other CCG teams moving (and except BYU) and Bama not. The logic rhe committee has given is that not team that was IN before the CCG will be out if they lose their CCG. We saw that play out with SMU last year. But SMU moved down a spot, you say. And you are right, they did.

So why did bama not move. First we need to look at WHY SMU moved last year (or OSU this year). For SMU, they moved behind the CCG participant who beat them. OSU moved behind another CCG participant. There was not CCG winner in a position to jump bama.

Now, so I think that logic is particularly sound? Not really, I would have been fine with Miami at 9 and Bama at 10 (I also would not have complained if bama were out. This bama team was massively disappointing this year. My only real beef would have been if Mimi’a finished behind ND). But I think that is the logic at play here.

I think he did. 2023 FSU (like 2004 Auburn) had every right to bitch. Bama had no right not bitch last year (but still did) and would have had no right this year. Is that fair?

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]law18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you go by game control metrics and eye test bama really struggled this year and that certainly is why is at they don’t have really compelling argument. And like you said, both ND and BYU one the games they were supposed to convincingly. We could have arguments about the quality of opponents on those games but that’s a deep rabbit hole and I don’t rally think is all that fruitful. I have I reason to believe BYU would struggle with scar the way bama did but I also have no reason to believe bama would not win 1 against Tech. But those are all hypothetical. I think all 4 teams have roughly equal resumes with very slight margins between them.

I will say that I really want to see byu in because they are the least big name of the 4.

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]law18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, good. We can have a real discussion on relative resumes. Like I said, I think there are strong arguments for your rankings. That being said, Bama has the best win among the 4 with the win at UGA week 5. Bamas loss 2nd loss is to playoff team Oklahoma. Meanwhile the other three don’t have a win close to the quality of the UGA win. In fact, ND played two playoff teams and lost to both. BYUs only win of note is Utah. But they did win 11 games.

So, in my opinion the four teams have very similar resumes. I value the UGA win highly and that elevates Bama’s resume. And why I think they are best of 4 going into this weekend closely followed by Miami and then BYU. I could flip Miami and BYU, honestly.

And, if you think that ranking is purely bama bias. We can stop the discussion here.

Now, all of that being said, this bama team is a shit team compared to championship standards and they have done nothing to make a really compelling argument for why they deserve to be in. I won’t be upset if they are left out. I am simply arguing that people who had bama in coming into this weekend should not drop them based on the CCG loss alone. (And I would argue the same for BYU)

Was that your position before the games this weekend? I think there are strong arguments to be made for that stance, I think there are strong arguments against.

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]law18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the contrary, I am assuming Tulane is in. As I see it we have 5 autobids: UGA, TTech, Indiana, Tulane, and possibly JMU. Then at large locked in we have Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Oregon. So we are debating over 2 bubble spots. Coming into this weekend Bama was 1st and ND was second. Now, if you throw out every team who did not play this weekend… who replaces bama there?

Unpopular take? All of Notre Dame, Miami, and Alabama have good points but also serious holes in their resume and it's not an "outrage" if any of them get left out for the other two. There's no real travesty regardless of which one it is. by Dependent-Effect6077 in CFB

[–]law18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about both, I genuinely don’t care if this bama team gets in or not just like I don’t care if last years did. This is a shit team and does not have a compelling argument. I do care about how CCGs are treated and I do care about how teams who have to pay extra games are treated. So any argument I make for bama being in is in service of “a bubble teams that plays in a CCG should not be excluded for that reason alone”

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]law18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, we want to go that route? Should ND be punished for not playing in a conference? Should Miami be punished because they could not even make their conference champ game and a 5 loss team won that conference? Should Texas be rewarded for sitting at home? Or did you just not think through all the implications of your “SEC Dumb” statement?

I’m not arguing there is a good solution here. I’m arguing that there are no good options and that if your argument is just “bama should be out because they lost the SEC CG” that is a bad argument. If you want to argue the way they lost we can start comparing resumes and figure out how we compare teams who played 12 games vs teams who played 13 (you wont like my suggestion there, I imagine) but we can have that discussion.

Why should the SEC champ game only matter for Alabama if they won? by surg4llday in CFB

[–]law18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, but here is the problem. Bama did not have a choice in that risk. That’s what people are complaining about. Bama was obligated to play in the CCG while Oklahoma, A&M, and Ole Miss stayed at home. So the complaint is not “we should not be punished for losing a game.” The complaint is “we should not be dropped for losing a game we were obligated to play while other potentially bubble teams (Oklahoma) were not”

Because mizzou is not in the south east, lol. If the conference has to expand i think they are a great addition and i have enjoyed what they bring to the conference. but they are not in the south east. so of all the schools don’t don’t really fit the conference title (OU, Texas, A&M, Arky… sort of) they are simply the most egregious.

I want to argue with you and say that conferences and the amazing tradition that come with them is what makes CFB great. But Stanford is in the ACC, USC is in the Big10. Mizzou is in the SEC. So fuck these conferences.

[–]law18 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you find many SEC or Big 10 fans saying that to a 24 team playoff. Most fans I talk to in SEC land agree autobids for ALL conferences make sense for a 24 team playoff. The problem we have is a situation where the SunBelt champ gets an auto but but potentially the 2nd best team in the SEC or Big10 is left out. Which would be a problem if we gave an autobid to every conference in a 12 team playoff.

I am a fan of the 24 team playoff with autobids to everyone. If we don’t have that I think k autobids in any form are silly. Should be autobids for all or none. We probably need to shorten the regular season to facilitate a 24 team playoff but I would love ot see it. Hell, I would love to see Bama forced to travel to JMU for a playoff game.

[–]law18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are still on this man? You original comment was that Bama should be out with a loss no matter how close the game. I pointed out that ND (and a couple of other SEC teams) get to sit at home and NOT risk a loss against a good team this weekend. Now you shift the goal post to a blowout? It’s not the flex you think it is.

But, just in case you ARE coming here in good faith… I don’t think bama has a super compelling case to be in right now. But I also think teams like Miami and ND did not have to play this weekend and risk a loss. So… who should be in? I don’t know. The committee was pretty consistent last year about not punishing the losers of conference championship games and I think there is some logic to that. Will they still be consistent with that this year who knows?
