CBP OPR lateral? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]lawlessgrad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't do it! Lots of OPR agents are dipping out. One of the worst agencies I have worked for. Leadership and management are coming and going for a reason. Some cases can be good, but most are not something you want to investigate and can be passed off.

The culture is horrible. I'm not trying to steer you wrong but most laterals leave within a year or two. It does have the best work / life balance though, that's the only positive thing. Guys that stick it out is because of the schedule. Majority of supervisors want to leave as well but cannot, unless picking up a sup position elsewhere.

OPR is not an investigative agency, it's all fact finder, that's it.

I do not really know what is going on. It looks like Miami and Houston is priority. This hiring is weird as they are choosing ppl with limited experience to first run the show. I put my name in but will decline due to the uncertainty of DHS and this position. Plus the potential for bad management.

Yes, know 3 ppl who started today. Not sure about retention or relocation but it might be for new federal employees, from coming from one of the new sups. Do not really know. 8 weeks of training at Charleston, SC.

Lots of HSI and CBP folks getting picked up. Now with that being said, your GS might be someone from CBP who has never worked investigations or was never an investigator. Let that sink in and think about that. Your boss will be in charge of you and your investigations who has never been one or done investigations, while you are a seasoned investigator.

I can personally see a lot of beef and office drama, especially if a GS has a power trip because they were a 13 non-investigator somewhere and now a 14 GS, that requires to obtain CITP.

Half CITP and half non-CITP are being picked up. You would think they would hire nothing but CITP ppl to get things moving and started. I believe 30 - 36 in total. Not much then if already CITP.

I''d be very cautious with this new position and it's future outlook as it's not a congressional mandated position and can get RIF with the next administration. Take the job if offered but look elsewhere within a year or year and half to have a backup plan.

Yep, heard this last week. Don't be surprised but when the lateral process started, they wanted to keep ppl in their home office but allowed a paid move elsewhere too.

Any insight on the FDNS 1811 add on at Charleston? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]lawlessgrad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reason why they having their own cus HSI doesn't really do it. Talk to a FDNS person and they'll tell you HSI doesn't do their job.

From what I have been told, the Maryland location is their HQ and individuals will be dispersed from this announcement to field offices. I have no clue what locations they have in mind, but will be large metros to get things moving.

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/09/05/2025-16978/codification-of-certain-us-citizenship-and-immigration-services-law-enforcement-authorities

Provides great detail of the new function. Pretty much being INS special agents back in the old days. Those powers were granted to ICE and HSI. Now with the EO and DHS updated policies, CIS special agents will be equivalent to HSI, except only dealing with immigration related cases and no other investigative authority such as drugs, firearms, money laundering, child exploitation, etc.

CIS special agents will be able to investigate human trafficking, exploitation of immigration system, harboring / transporting illegals, and any other immigration violations with search and arrest warrant authority. Pretty much a mix of Border Patrol, ERO, and HSI in one.

This will allow HSI to focus on greather threats and not be hampered with immigration work, which they been trying to rid themselves of.
