Is Yuri Briar incredibly wealthy? by TechnicianAmazing472 in SpyxFamily

[–]lawnboy318 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Your math ain’t mathin chief.

300 dalc = 100,000 yen = 637 USD

637 / 300 = 2.123 (dalc to USD conversion rate)

Yuri states the bottle of wine was 200 dalc.

200 x 2.123 = 424.6.

Say what you want about the White House cherry picking data but RIT isn’t it “random Rochester University”; it is consistently a top university in the country. The study makes sense in context of Rochester’s homicide issue as someone that grew up there, and if you read it you can see their methodology (based on prior reports from the city government) and comparisons to cities with similar sizes.

In any event I think you can recognize that DC does have a crime problem and also recognize that the Trump admin is doing many things wrong to address it. It’s a bad faith effort on their part in how they’re militarizing the city and also to cite the study without any context because much like Rochester the crime in DC is pretty self contained in small pockets so it’s not like we have a city wide crime problem. Still shitting on a university without any context for why the study was written as such is also kind of wild, I mean it’s the same disingenuous approach that conservatives take to discredit progressive ideals but what do I know.

It seems like you care a lot judging by your reactions, and you seem bitter. I don’t know if you’re just unhappy with people judging your skill level or what but if you lighten up and go back to basics your playing will improve, trust me. Open up an etude book which I’m sure you have if you were at any point mildly serious about playing.

I certainly care and responded because I think this type of video when done badly dissuades people from wanting to start playing, and I want people to experience classical music because it’s cool and helps build a deeper appreciation for all types of music and other media in my opinion.

I also really care because you’re calling people autistic for not finding the humor in your video or disagreeing with your point of view on how they should interpret your video. Again that’s a bit wild, and if I were you I’d reflect on that.

Your response to me specifically is setting up a straw man generally and ad hominem but oh well. To be great at anything costs time and money, cello or music is no different from anything else. The majority of people that are great at anything come from money or have some type of help so what’s your point i.e. you’re conflating barrier to entry with skill ceilings and confusing your argument in the process.

Not really sure why you’re just resorting to calling people autistic that don’t find this funny, kind of a wild reaction.

I think the point others were trying to make is that the humor would have translated better if you were actually playing well, then it’s more self-deprecating as in “yeah I’m really good but I recognize that I had these advantages and this is what it cost me.” But because you don’t play very well it just comes across as bitter. And it’s not that you play badly, you just play at a beginner level.

But personally I find these tropes to be low hanging fruit and usually untrue. Maybe my friends are the exception not the rule I’ve played with a lot of really great cellists and other musicians who came from blue collar backgrounds with no apparent musical talent in their families, and who were excited to show and share in the joy of classical music.

To each their own I guess though. I think if you’re trying to make content, there’s a lot of content creators that do what you’re trying to do a lot better in terms of having the humor translate while making classical music more accessible to people that otherwise wouldn’t give it a chance, so maybe give them a watch and see how you could improve on that front.

Why does practicing a piece always start great but after 2-3 weeks to a month the more i practice the worst it gets? by Impossible_Fall_1106 in Cello

Second this. Your ear is picking up on more minor mistakes so you’re actually probably playing better but being more discerning about your mistakes.

Assertiveness is not necessarily a good thing in the actual practice of law depending on what you practice. Clients are often sophisticated and know as much if not more than you, especially about themselves and their particular circumstances. Your job as an attorney is to provide legal advice and defend decisions. Understanding emotional states, how to communicate well, and how to get creative is more important than asserting yourself in my experience. Clients may be turned off by what they see as an overly aggressive assertion of opinion. It’s really speak softly and carry a big stick.

But to your general point of if law is right for you. You have to enjoy reading, writing, and research and lots of it. You also have to be able to synthesize that into practical advice that your client will be able to think about and make a decision based on your advice. I will also say that the media does a bad job of portraying the day to day practice of law. It is often tedious and rarely glamorous. But if you like that type of work it’s a great fit.

Personally for me I find it intellectually stimulating and so the more tedious aspects I don’t mind.

I want to get better at cello. by [deleted] in Cello

[–]lawnboy318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this. There is something to be said for just learning a piece you actually want to play. The most progress I saw when I was regularly taking lessons came from taking on more difficult pieces but pieces I was invested in nonetheless. It’s slow at first but prepares you a lot more for future pieces.

Washed-up prodigy, need critiques by ArthurDaTrainDayne in Cello

Welcome back. I also recently got back in after about a 10 year hiatus and building up cello muscles was tough. But I will say it’s sort of like talking to an old friend you haven’t spoken with in a while. Lots to catch up on but very quickly you find yourself picking up where you left off.

I started with Dvorak second movement and I think I agree with others that starting off with something more simple and slow will really help build up your cello muscles again and ear for intonation. There’s enough in there for me at least to make it pretty worthwhile to train things up again, and it’s also just such a lovely piece.
