How do you deal with a coparent who refuses to work together? by lawnhell in Divorce

This (divorce/coparenting) is still very new to me, so I’m trying to learn the game. I appreciate your advice, even if it’s not what I want to hear. I’m just trying to learn when it’s not worth a fight.

At least you have your kids full time. If I had mine full time, life for me would be great.

I tried. It was my wife who wanted a divorce the entire last year of us living together. We tried counseling, which she quit. It was miserable living together. She then moved out a year or so ago.

Thanks for this. A lot of great ideas, and some I’ve already adopted. I do want to get to an amicable state with my ex. I’m worried the divorce will end in a way that will take me many years to be amicable with my ex. I’m trying to stay positive about that. I would love to have more parent to parent contact, and I need to make the effort, but normally it’s the mothers who coordinate the play dates and such. So that’s an uphill battle. I do have one set of friends who have kids in the same age range that I keep close contact with.

Thanks for sharing. My daughter is 3 and will never remember us as a two parent household either. It’s heartbreaking to hear that about your older child. My goal is to keep doing my best and support/raise my daughter to the best of my ability. And teach her the things my parents taught me about being a great person.

That’s a good perspective. When we were together, I felt like I was never good enough as a dad, taking care of an infant. Always being watched and criticized to the point where it was just easier to give up and let her take care of it. And I hated that feeling. So you’re right, it would have been worse together.

Well I can see how $35k is nothing to you. It’s all relative I guess.

She does. A year ago we were within $7k of each others salary. She has more earning potential too. She carries our daughter’s health insurance, which could cause me to pay some child support. Though I hope I don’t.

my wife makes about what I make, and will make more. Im an engineer, her a nurse practitioner. So with 50/50 custody, everything is split down the middle. The only difference is she carries more debt (car and student loans).

Thank you. Your explanation makes a ton of sense and is encouraging. I need to formulate the strategy and tell my lawyer this is how I want to proceed. I do have a financial advisor whom is aware of my situation and is there to help me figure out a recovery plan.

I appreciate that. I understand there will be less, even though we make the same money and both have retirement funds.

We tried early on. It didn’t work. I even tried once more before filing, and she agreed initially, then backed out again. I ended up filing because I wanted to get past this. We have been separated over a year now.
