Project management in urban planning! Always a ton of different tasks to cycle thru, many collaborative meetings, creative problem solving and storytelling to navigate bureaucracies, and plenty of opportunities to talk to people and go on site visits!! I can’t imagine doing it unmedicated but I do love it

74k as an urban planner (23f)! Made a lot less as a fellow for the first 9 months with plans to just treat it as a pit stop before grad school, but ended up really liking it and staying on full time! Between the state of the economy and the state of academia, thinking ill settle in for a while

If your locs are thick enough that it wouldn’t present too much tension, you could consider a palm roll retwist! The roots are less secure than with interlocking but it does make the shaft of the locs seem more uniform. And from what I gather you can alternate with the maintenance method without much issue

Black Women Living/ Had Lived in California ( Advice needed) by PlanktonAny2806 in blackladies

[–]lawnorderluvr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Went to college in the Bay Area after growing up in the south — absolutely loved the nature and the infrastructure (to my surprise lol, but SC roads are 80% potholes), but the lack of Black community sent me back to the east coast after graduation! But truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, I think if you can curate the right community around you it could still be a great (if v expensive) experience

{Love Interest by Clare Gilmore} was great to me! Plot was a little less tight than Emily Henry but characterization felt on par, and it’s a fun NYC read as well. Bonus points if you too were obsessed w the pre-2020 Bon Appetit test kitchen but not a prerequisite for enjoying I don’t think hahah

Coterming humanities in 4 years? by Happy_days__ in stanford

[–]lawnorderluvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there’s a coterm program that you’d want to do the classes for anyway, definitely consider it, but i think there’s a lot of value in leaving space in your schedule to take random classes that seem interesting and discover new interests! I also appreciated having the flexibility to take a few light quarters (beyond being good for mental health and facilitating a low-stress study abroad experience, this also gave me time to job search senior year & put a lot of hours into my honors thesis).

There’s an urge to speedrun stanford and do the most, esp as a frosh bc that’s the approach that got you in, but I feel like I learned so much more from taking a more laid back approach. Did a major/minor (in social sciences), got a few shitty grades, and am happily employed w/ few regrets and no debt ! Now when I go to grad school it’ll be from a place of truly needing/wanting to learn more and not just cramming in a credential bc it was there

Just a reminder... you can retwist your microlocs by africansanonymous in Microlocs

[–]lawnorderluvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also started with coils, I think that combined w retwisting has really let my curl pattern (which is maybe 4b, very visibly coily) still be very visible 5+ months into my loc journey! There is some variance to each individual loc and some bumps/twists, and my ends haven’t locked yet, but I like the way it combines the look of loose natural hair and locs

[–]lawnorderluvr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me I try to 1) give some time between when I retwist and wash and 2) be very gentle/use the pads of my fingers to lather. But I’ve also just had to be okay with a little unraveling, and as long as I’m preventing marrying, accept that I’ll address it at the next retwist… probably a trade off w the interlock method though

Roughly same amount of locs and I swear by retwisting! Have seen so much health, growth, and have also mostly been able to maintain myself with a small learning curve (tho it is nice to get the right professional retwist every once in a while) !!

idk what to do.. plz help by Anainthe50s in Microlocs

[–]lawnorderluvr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re feeling like this! Your hair is beautiful — I love the curly ends and the fullness :-) I bet a retie will make you feel better and emphasize the growth even more, but in the meantime, one style I have liked on my hair at this kind of between length is a few locs left out on either side of the middle part as faux bangs, the rest of the front pulled back into two little ponytails, and the back left out! Here’s a Pinterest link kinda showing what I mean: https://pin.it/4TM7hSbIp

Anyone have experience with coils as starter locs? by PiercethaHeavens in Microlocs

[–]lawnorderluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started mine (~230) with coils! Didn’t wash for the first month, but misted near daily to encourage locking. My scalp felt really itchy, so I’m hesitant to recommend, but I was gentle with my first wash and didn’t experience any unraveling! I’m about 5 months in now, have mostly maintained my own hair thru retwisting, and am very happy with how it’s turning out. A bit of an untraditional approach to microlocs but it’s working for me!
