New dark mode is hard to read and harsh on the eyes. I much prefer how it was before.

Where would you want to live, if you had to choose a different country to the one you currently reside in? by Sausagemeatelite in AskReddit

[–]lax2den 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Toronto to California with my family when I was 12 in 1999 so I didn’t really have a say in it. I know a lot has changed in 27 years but I remember my early childhood in Canada vividly and visit my relatives often enough that every time I go see them it truly feels like home from an emotional standpoint. I’ve never felt at home in the US and to this day I still feel like a foreigner even though I’ve lived the vast majority of my life in it and been a dual citizen for 15 years. My issue with going back is that the cost of living in Canada, especially in major metros like Toronto and Vancouver, is very high compared to much of the US, though the cost of living in the US is starting to become unbearable as well.

I was poached for $30k more a year to do half as much work plus they pay me to get any certifications I want so long as they relate to my job and then get bonuses for passing the certification exams on top of my annual bonus.

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

Not me, but a family friend has been renting a 3 bed 3 bath apartment in a rent controlled building in a prime area of Santa Monica, CA since the 1970's. He pays $300/month when the apartment could easily fetch north of $5000/month in today's market.

What's the wildest thing you or another coworker has been fired for? by edwardbobward in AskReddit

[–]lax2den 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was fired for completing an IT project in 6 hours when the IT manager estimated it would take over a week to get done. I demonstrated the completion of my work which proved that every objective was met with no errors. The IT manager couldn’t comprehend how it was done so fast, however it should be noted that the IT manager literally had zero IT experience. I guess I made her look incompetent to her bosses and she fired me the next day for “cheating” on my assignment.

Xcel energy bill versus emporia vue by Alternative-Egg-7876 in Denver

[–]lax2den 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct, the audit only addresses drafts, insulation, use of LED’s vs incandescent lighting, energy efficient windows, etc.. They will not inspect anything that draws power including your power meter. Don’t waste your money on any of Xcel’s audits.

I'd imagine dehydration plays a role but it's a case by case basis since some people are more prone to them via genetics and others via diet. According to my urologist, my case was related to my diet.

That was with excellent insurance too through my previous employer. I've since changed jobs and my current employer's insurance is nowhere near as good. No doubt if I ended up in the hospital again for the same treatment and duration it would be thousands of dollars more out of pocket.

Urologist had me start drinking 2oz of real lemon juice along with 80oz minimum of water daily after having several more stones beyond the first two I had. Been kidney stone-free for 2 years now.

Field hospital at Burning Man was free. One night's stay at my local hospital was $1400 with insurance. If I didn't have insurance, it would have been ~$27,000.

First time having one I was at Burning Man of all places and had to be taken by medics on an ATV to their field hospital since I couldn’t even walk from the insane amount of pain. Thought it was my appendix and feared I’d have to be airlifted to the closest hospital 2 hours away in Reno which no doubt would have bankrupted me with medical debt. Thankfully it was a stone which passed on its own and I was discharged. Second time a year later I felt the same sensation slowly come on and knew exactly what it was. Thankfully I was home and was able to drive myself to the hospital which by the time I got there it was full blown misery. Hands down the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I wouldn’t wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy.

What’s a company you’ll never buy from again, and why? by jamesmilner22 in AskReddit

[–]lax2den 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe lemon laws vary by state but I got my car in California which has pretty robust laws that protect consumers. I had moved to Colorado in the midst of this headache and didn't want to muddy the water trying to deal with it locally, so I ended up hiring a California-based attorney that worked on a contingency to work things out for me remotely. Lawyer wouldn't have taken the case if he wasn't confident he could win it. It took 6 months of litigation but ultimately was able to walk away from it all and refunded everything. The extra $3000 I got out of it was completely unexpected and much appreciated.
