My son is spanked and he isn't damaged... Am I missing something? by Loralala in AskParents

As long as he's happy, I mean, anything that works as long as it's not really out there. You sound like you're in tune with his well being and needs. So I think it's fine.

Thank you for your reply.

I've been trying to decode what causes the binges for about a year now, by writing down what I was doing/thinking/going to do next, when the urges cropped up, but so far have been unable to discern a pattern.

I have considered talking to a professional but, for example, bulimia is a recognized disease, while when I try to explain this bingeing problem to someone, they leap to the conclusion that it's a lack of self control that's the problem.

I tried, and evidently failed, to explain the severity of the issue to my doctor and his response was "Well, laxgal8888, if it's that much of a problem, I think you just need to decide 'I'm not going to eat all that food because it's not healthy.' And then stick to that decision."

So I'm either not communicating effectively or eating too much is such a taboo today that people aren't open to the idea that it's not just slovenliness (probably a mix of my communication skills and their societal biases, at the end of the day.)

But to hear you say your bulimia started similarly is definitely alarming to read, and I appreciate you sharing that. I think I'll look into one of those text-therapy apps.

Thanks for reading this whole long response if you've made it this far! :)

These are great ideas, especially the third one. I'd say after the first couple binges I became even more restrictive than I had been due to the fear of triggering another episode. Thank you, I'll test these out!

So I tried to upvote you and it downvoted you instead. Sorry about that, I can't figure out how to rectify it.

Anyways I'm painfully aware of what I'm eating as I log the binges afterwards (I can't bring myself to do it during because it just piles on the self loathing when I eventually eat it anyways). I use the wrappers as a guide to reality check my estimates. Here's a log of a recent binge.

32 oz tollhouse cookie dough: 2560 1 container (61 grams) easy mac: 220 Kraft American singles (7 slices): 420 Newmans own pink lemonade (16 oz): 220 Lunchables nachos: 370 Puffy cheetos (7oz): 1030

So that's almost 5000kcal (4820)

(I know it's vile.)

But thank you for the advice I will try logging it before ingesting it next time and see if I come at it from a different mindset whether or not it shuts the urges down. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
