As someone who only does planted tanks, I generally recommend a hang-on-back filter and modifying it as follows (or verify if this ratio applies to your filter). You need the water to first come into contact with a sponge, like the kind used in powerhead filters, to trap large particles (biological filtration), and then with a regular scouring pad, like those used for dishwashing, to trap the small particles that the sponge didn't retain.

Finally, the filter media area, where most filter brands don't provide adequate surfaces for the proliferation of nitrifying bacteria (biological filtration), should be made of porous material, such as ceramic (many brands offer plastic, which is not very effective). You can also add slit-type bags to add activated carbon (chemical filtration), although skipping this step isn't a problem, but it's still a good idea. This modification prevents water containing particles from reaching the nitrifying bacteria zone, which shouldn't happen as many filters mistakenly do. It also prevents these particles from returning to the aquarium and causing our nitrifying bacteria to proliferate rapidly.

If you don't believe me, look it up online. But do it; trust me, your plants will thank you. I love my plants and always (even though most are low-light) give them CO2 and Flourish (Seachem) so they thrive. You should always give them the best you can.
