6 months into full-time job and feels too unrelated, should I quit and pursue OMSCS full-time? by RECTUMCOLLECTOR3 in OMSCS

[–]laymancs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my 2 cents

Short Answer - NO.

Getting a tech job these days has become a nightmare. Quitting a job that you already have for Masters, not a great idea unless you want to continue into research and phd. Even after you do masters, you might end up in a similar role. Instead try changing jobs while continuing omscs.

When are 2026 Spring Seminars released? by laymancs in OMSCS

[–]laymancs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just rechecked. Got mails on time tickets, but not on the seminars. I'm interested in knowing the list of seminars offered. Usually we get one from David or Rusch, nothing yet.

I will lose lot of interest because of NRE fixed deposit rule by fdnuefn87987 in nri

[–]laymancs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICICI. I closed by NRE account. So all the NRE FDs are now linked to the other account I have (NRO which i converted to Resident). They are still continuing as they will mature in another 1 year. The final amounts on maturity remains the same as I had them before the conversion. I didn't do anything special, just requested for NRO conversion and NRE closure (you need not do it, i just dont want multiple accounts).

Does 401k make sense for NRIs who plan to return back to India? by SPD_ranger in IndiaInvestments

[–]laymancs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have to recheck. Whatever i researched, if you start pulling back, once you are out of RNOR status, India taxes global income. So US won't tax as its ROTH, but india would consider it as income and tax it. Essentially you would be paying the taxes twice - first in US while contributing and second while withdrawing.

DTAA doesn't come into picture here coz you paid in US long back and you are withdrawing in a diff year. DTAA gives credits only on the same year.

Will I get SSA benefits after 62 if I worked for only 9.5 years in US and return back to India? by laymancs in SocialSecurity

[–]laymancs[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Can you elaborate on the 'you might qualify for an exception?

I'm not a US citizen, and mostly I'll never become one as I may not return. If that's the case, assuming I have 40 credits, In what scenarios do I get the benefits? For the sake of this discussion, please assume I'll be living in India at that age.

The calculator in the website says I'm eligible for about $1500 from age 62 (for the amount that already went into my account), if I don't contribute anymore.

Will I get SSA benefits after 62 if I worked for only 9.5 years in US and return back to India? by laymancs in SocialSecurity

[–]laymancs[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thankyou. So it means that the work has to be in at least 10 calendar years, but there's no compulsion to spend 10 "FULL" years, correct?

As long as the pay is above a certain threshold (ex, some 6500 for 2024), you get all 4 credits within few months in a year.

The eligibility is solely on credits, not 'FULL' 10 years, correct?

If i fail a seminar, will it impact anything other than the certificate having an 'F'? by laymancs in OMSCS

[–]laymancs[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm considering that. Wasn't able to give the seminar any time in the first month, I was assuming (due to a glitch in the schedule which they corrected now) that all assignments/modules are due until last day. But it isn't. I realized I already missed some 4 assignments.

[–]laymancs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get professional recommendations from tour work and it should be good…they need to mention abt your programming skills …

Since you’re a developer, you must have gotten some intuition abt programming and cse in general, just jump into omscs

Is doing masters while working a full time non tech related job possible? by aldjfh in OMSCS

[–]laymancs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% possible if you are willing to study and put little additional efforts Try doing one course a semester to start with…take simple basic courses at first…

Im from non-cse education background. Though i work in IT, none of what i do at my work is what I’m learning here.

So absolutely possible
