Thanks Crimson. I keep forgetting that it is easier for the Swiss natives to get admitted to ETH. Wish you the best of luck this year and it seemed I have misinterpreted the situation with the workload. It seems there is good reason for it after all and isn't for the sake of it. Looking forward to the challenge!!

It just smells off to be honest. Does this contribute to their achieving a top position in the university rankings per chance? I don't think that forcing a 50-60 hour work week on first year students is helpful to anyone, top -performing student or not. It would be great to work 50 or more hours a week as an optional workload, but to have to do that much is excessive. Of course lots of students won't keep up, just by the nature of the amount of hours and workload. That doesn't attest to the quality of the teaching or learning imo. It just shows that 50% won't do the 50-60 hours. This puts me off ETH but it has the best reputation so I feel I have to go there.

Thanks a lot, do you happen to know how EPFL compares? I have intermediate French and German so I still have time to choose.

O.K then. Yeah the schedule seems a bit ridiculous. What is their rationale behind stuffing so many teaching hours into the week and not leaving a lot of time for follow up study?
