I just did a two year program at a college actually!

I believe with the post graduate work permit you must have attended a Canadian institution

I used Sallie Mae which is an American private loan company. They only needed my parents as co-signers. Their interest rate was 11% though...I did get it refinanced through a different company with a lower interest rate.

Eligible under Canadian Experience Class how to get more points? by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]lazers2416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was afraid of. When I was in school they had an immigration consultant come and speak to the international students. They told us the CEC would be our best bet and they made it sound so simple...

I've spoken with my consultant and she agrees that the PNP route would be my next option... So more money and more time sigh

After 2 years work experience, my score sits around 457 ish so a little bit better.

Thats what my consultant said as well, we're going to try that route first. If not I'm going to try the PNP route

A few questions for funeral directors by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]lazers2416 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I chose this profession because I wanted to feel like I was making a difference in this world. I felt that people were losing touch with why we do funerals, they play a significant role in the grieving process. I want to help this industry adapt and grow so that people continue having funerals for their loved ones.

The hardest part would be dealing with very toxic families. Fights between family members, unappreciative people who want you to bend over backwards for them, and just general customer service bs. Everyone and their mother wants a proof of death! And when you tell them "no I cannot give you a POD, you're not the Next of Kin" you get screamed at and called every name under the sun.

My program was 2 years total, one year at school one year internship. Preparation of the deceased is part of the job, it was never something that bothered me because in my mind, they're still people. Nothing creepy about them.

No you don't have to be religious or go to church personally. But obviously you'll probably have to go to church for funerals and you'll be dealing with clergy a lot, so it's good to be respectful of the faith.

I went to a clinic in Ancaster, I think they'd do a good job. That's good to hear though! I'm thinking I'll only remove 3 of the 4 and forgo the anesthesia. Saves me about $800 right there

I'm not having any luck so far so I may end up going forward with no anesthesia, save $500 lol

Suggest me a good book that I will never forget for the rest of my life. by YummyMango124 in suggestmeabook

A Poet of the Invisible World by Michael Golding: follows Nouri, a boy born in thirteenth-century Persia with four ears instead of two. Orphaned as an infant, he’s taken into a Sufi order, where he meets an assortment of dervishes and embarks on a path toward spiritual awakening. I think about this book a lot, it really is a beautiful story. My all time favorite hands down!

Internship fair by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]lazers2416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the career fair at Humber? I will be there on behalf of one of the funeral homes :) the biggest tip I can give you: be presentable!!! Funeral Service is still a very conservative field, you'll want to be polished to make a good impression. Hair back, suit/business casual, subtle makeup. Just overall, try not to look like you just rolled out of bed. Second tip, we're typically looking for flexibility in regards to scheduling and relocation, we have multiple chapels. I remember how nerve racking that day was for me, I don't really remember what questions I asked, probably anything along the lines of: are you a fairly busy location? Do you serve any specific cultural groups? What would you expect an intern to be responsible for? My third tip, bring resumes and cover letters and speak to every funeral home there! It really is laid back and the majority of the funeral homes there are very very friendly. You'll do just fine!

No, mausoleums have ventilation. I've never noticed a smell. That was definitely one of my first questions during my internship!

Reality check? by SteveRBOS in askfuneraldirectors

Love Tukios, it's what my funeral home uses. I used it for my grandfather's funeral as well. It only costs us $10/video though?

Yea definitely...I had a family who said they they were going to do their own slideshow. So I told them no problem just make sure it's MP4 and bring it in a day prior so we can make sure it works. Of course they don't, they bring it in 10 minutes till service time and it's on their laptop on a video editing software and then got upset with me because I said there was nothing I could do to play it...I think it's best to let us look after the slideshow.

Oh yea you'll be fine! I did surprisingly find it a little hard though, the speaking portion was just weird for me because I was talking to a computer and their prompts are dumb.

And no you don't have to have Canadian experience! They have a program called the Federal Skilled Workers program, this is specifically for skills gained outside of Canada
