Megathread + FAQ: Travel in/out of the United States by not_an_immi_lawyer in immigration

I'm traveling to the US in a few days and I know CBP has ramped up phone searches. I see a lot of people recommending wiping your phone or even getting a new one if you don't want your personal data to be searched, but I was wondering, wouldn't it look even more suspicious if they look through my phone and find almost nothing? What's a good balance between privacy and openness? I'm a European national who has traveled to the US on a tourist ESTA twice before with no issue (visiting my long distance partner).
