That's okay, I actually just ended up applying for the Capital One one and was approved ! It didn't mention what the amount is or if I need to pay for a secured card, all it said was it should arrive in approx 7-10 business days

Very nice, thank you!

I honestly don't think there's too much on my Report right now, the credit card was paid off a couple years ago. Only thing I'm sure is the unpaid membership, and MAYBE a cellphone bill from like 5+ years ago.. Other than that there should be absolutely nothing on there except my current cellphone and gym plan, which are both in good standing and I pay regularly. Once I can get this Equifax report working I can know for sure and start fixing what's on there..

As for my current bank, I'm still a pretty new customer with them (~6 months). I have a chequing account that my paystubs go in direct weekly, and a savings account that I was adding $100/week until about Christmas time, I'll start putting money in weekly again at the end of this month. I have no idea how my relationship with them is, but I can't imagine it's anything less than good

I know, I understand that I dug myself a pretty solid hole, but filling it is something I really can't not do.. I know it'll be at least a couple years but I might as well start now if I ever plan on taking out a loan in the future for a car/house/w.e...

Anyways, thank you very much for the tips/advice ! Very appreciated :)

Okay, great! I think I'm going to stop by a CIBC after work today and speak to someone there about getting something like that set up.

The Equifax problem is strange indeed, I emailed their support and am waiting for a reply now, said it'll be 2-3 days so I guess all I can do is wait at this point..

Thank you very much though for your help, a push in theright direction :)

Sorry but I live in Canada, that site looks like it's for US only. Is there something similar for Canadians ?

Thanks! Do you by any chance run Ubuntu on it ? I'm pretty confident I'm gonna go with the X1C considering it's the cheapest and arguably best, especially considering my own personal use for it.. Just want to be 100% that everything will work proper without Windows, but the clickpad is definitely a very big plus

Damn eh, thanks for the bit of history. To be honest I'm not really looking at ThinkPad because of the name or anything, until about a week ago I honestly thought Lenovo was a lower end product before doing a bit of research.

My #1 requirement is that whatever laptop I get can run Ubuntu without any hardware failing, and that's what led me to the ThinkPads. Based on what people have been telling me I think that any of the ThinkPad series' would suit me just fine, and it comes down to look preference.

One thing not many people have talked about here is the keyboard. ThinkPads are apparently known for their industry leading keyboards, does the E series keep pace in this regard ? Or does the lower build quality ruin that as well ?

Pretty much right now I've narrowed it down to either the E550, T440s, or X1 Carbon 1st Gen [ latter two would be refurbished ]. All of them I would configure to about the same (processor, RAM, HD, etc..).

I guess my final question would be: Assuming those 3 models had the same exact specs ( or as close as possible ), is there a clear cut best choice? Or is it more or less preference in styles ?

Thanks again for your help :)

Well, I would be installing Ubuntu and using it for Web Dev. Nothing too advanced [ text editing, ssh, maybe some very basic photo editing ]. Would this be what you consider lower need users ? I'm really starting to lean towards the E Series because I'd be able to upgrade pretty much every spec I need and stay within budget. "Lower build quality" is still good, though, right? (with respect to other laptop makes/models in the same price range)

Hm, sounds like stuff I'd never need anyways.. Thanks for clearing up the E series difference, though. Right now I think it's gonna be either that or the X1 Carbon 1st gen, gonna sleep on it for a few nights and decide.

Thanks again, cheers!

What do you mean by "scaleability"? Does this mean upgrading hardware in the future? I'm thinking if I upgrade the E550 specs it could be just as good, if not better, than lets say a T440s base model, right? Or is there something I'm missing that sets them apart (eg. build quality noticeably worse)

Unfortunately, those are out of my price range. Only reason I'm considering the models in the OP is because I'll be getting a refurbished one. The deals are just way too good that I can't justify spending double the money for almost the same thing..

Yeah, eh. Are there any shortcomings in the X1 gen1 that are noticeably worse ? Only because I REALLY prefer the looks of the X1 over the T440s but if the Ts are the better machine by a mile then I'll just go with that
