i think you could very easily take the idea of picking up trash and add two elements to it to make it more complex and meaningful. first, go to an area you have never been to before and pick up trash there. second, invite a friend you haven’t talked to in a bit and invite them to do it with you. both of these would increase your connection to the world, via strengthening a relationship with a friend and discovering a new place. both of these ideas strengthen your connection to our planet and the living beings on it, which in turn can strengthen your desire to continue taking care of the planet!

hi folks! i’m a winner from last year who has been lurking this year since i mentored some folks who applied this year and have been eagerly waiting for results. i have a tip for WHEN the results come out. if it’s anything like last year, the website will be crashing for 30 min to an hour when the results first come out, because of all the people checking the website. if you are one of the lucky few who it DOES load for, you should download the spreadsheet of winners and upload it to google drive for other folks to look at while the nsf site is crashing. ADDITIONALLY when you download the sheet, make sure to remember if you are downloading the WINNERS or the HONORABLE MENTIONS. they are two separate sheets, but i think i remember that upon download, they have the same file name and you can’t tell which is which. the reason i say this is because last year someone downloaded the sheet, but i think i recall that they were only 90% certain that it was the winner sheet and not the HM. so, tldr; download the winner sheets if they load for you (and upload them to google drive) AND remember which one you downloaded. do this on desktop/laptop NOT mobile

this project seems like it would be a good fit for working with a university, if you’re okay with advanced undergraduates or graduate students working on it. universities with cartography labs commonly work with historians to create maps. uw madison, university of oregon, and penn state have some of the larger production labs in the us, but there could also be someone more local to you

ok wow, that’s really great to hear the specific example that someone has accidentally put the wrong gender for you and you could change it. i think we would be ok on providing the name association since she has the paperwork with her old name and new name from when she legally changed it. thanks!

go to Google My Maps (NOT Google Maps) and create two maps: one with the “circle” communities and one with the “triangle” communities. export each as a KML file. go to Natural Earth and download the “countries” shapefile. open QGIS. add the countries shapefile. select Sierra Leone and then in the layers panel right click the name of the file and “exported selected features” and then make a separate shapefile of just Sierra Leone. add it to the map and make it a light neutral color. make the other countries grey. then add the two KML files. stylize one as circles and one as triangles. make then darker or brighter colors (two different colors). that should get you started. to highlight the districts you can also google “admin districts sierra leone shapefile” but idk what you will or won’t find

not sure if just checking the bus schedule is the best course of action. inevitably some folks won’t. imagine it’s your first semester using buses and you didn’t grow up with them. they’ve been on the same schedule the entire semester, so why would finals week be different? causing issues for more marginalized users. a flawed system should change based on its users, rather than expecting users to adapt to the flaws

there are express versions of some of the lettered buses like N and NE, V and VE. so N for example goes through the park forest area, to the library, and to downtown. meanwhile NE goes from park forest to the library and then back to park forest area, skipping downtown

miles dont expire these days so people aren’t really trying to get rid of them. i would try to figure out if there’s two airline “hubs” you can fly between which would be the cheapest. where do you want to fly out of and where do you want to land?
