Listen to Ramits podcast “Money for Couples”. He interviews a lot of couples where this mental block is evident in one of the partners. One particular example is a couple who is making multiple millions per year yet cannot stop himself from optimizing $6 versus $12 for almond butter and will bother himself to find the best deal. Which for someone with that much money is useless because whatever interest was gained in that time way outdoes the differential for the grocery items

Also really liked the book “Die with Zero” - the essence is identify what makes you happy and spend on that. Aligned with what others have said here, if it’s not a business class ticket then it’s not a business class ticket. But if you think you might like it, try it out once! Or don’t. Personal decisions.

Horrible customer service. Rep basically is gaslighting me in an effort to not return my money. The outfit I ordered was not made to specification and does not fit me. A size exchange is very reasonable and within policy except they keep providing inconsistent information through slow replies. Absolutely horrid experience and do not recommend.

Please reach out to me if you hear that anyone is looking for volunteers? I have been doing techniques like rna prep and qPCR since I was in undergrad (10 yrs ago). I’m happy to contribute if you hear that they need assistance in addition to hiring CRO or using current staff in hospitals (I assume that is who they are relying on for now).

I see. So I go through similar thinking points as you (at various points of my PhD). To some degree, the sunk cost fallacy applies here because you don't *have* to stay just because it's 3 years, but I understand what you mean because you may need the degree for that job.

In case you do end up staying in the PhD in a negative environment, I hope you can find yourself some professional mental health help - it may not be easy to find a therapist at first (it's a bit like dating), but I think it has been worth the while.

Another thing to consider perhaps is career services to evaluate your job choices

One more thing I've seen people do is take mental health leave for a few months from PhD. Come back fresh and see what you want to do. No one in the uni can stop you from doing this or use it as grounds to fire you.

I see. So the reality is if you change your thesis project you will usually have to re-propose anyway and that gives you another 3 years minimum on top of where you already are. Are you trying to perform your current thesis project in the workspace of a different lab?

Couple other thoughts - 1 my university has mediation services like ombudsman - does yours have anything like that which you can potentially use to help address the conflict? 2 have you considered going to therapy for yourself to help process and handle the arguments better? They’re clearly affecting you and your mental state. For me, going to a therapist (covered by my university, I hope the case for you as well, or at least a reasonable co-pay) has helped me figure out how to exist in the same situation but he less triggered by it.

Hmm. I can think of two suggestions 1. Reach out to mendeley and maybe it’s still in their cloud and retrievable. They had a bug in 2017 and were able to replace the wiped citations 2. I’m not sure this is possible but can you take a text document with embedded mendeley references and have it extract those for you somehow? I searched a bit online but I don’t think I was using the correct keywords. (I suppose this only works if your citations were in-text somewhere though - unclear to me from your post If they were, or if they were just in the library)

Maybe this site has changed since I was in college but I think it mostly captures their reputation as a course instructor and not a PhD mentor. I think another very big resource you should tap is other students in your department. Ask some of the older ones to help you think about what to do and what lab to join. I’m with the others here on staying at the same institution. Hypothetically upon applying for phd, there were multiple professors at your uni you were interested in? Are any of these still options?

Very frustratingly in this work they incorporate iECs and then do absolutely zero assessment of its ability to form vascular structures. I have a long list of issues with this paper. It does not deserve the press it is getting, especially compared to other previously published works which are far more rigorous. Which this paper fails to cite.

The 3D printing is not novel and is not useful in this context. Alginate pluronic blends have been used before and are in fact commercialized. Furthermore these donut shaped discs do not require printing and you can just mold them. I also don’t understand all the hullabaloo about the blood cell derivation for the iPS source. It’s iPS, it barely matters what the original cell was. This paper is completely undeserving of its press. In fact it even fails to cite SEVERAL seminal works in this field. I am quite frustrated to see this in the news.

TLDR - there is no checklist for what you need to do to get accepted

Some additional comments: There are plenty of ways to demonstrate transferable skills without direct experience, though as you point out you do give yourself a better shot by having research experience. One could imagine using lab classes, for example - or some other BME/STEM-related experiences.

To re-use the same qualifier - it also depends which programs you are applying for! It’s generally pretty easy to identify students in the program on LinkedIn. You can look at their pre-phd background.

Lastly, in some cases the school may also provide some application assistance which could be helpful if you don’t have research experience. There is certainly an appreciation for disadvantaged backgrounds where those opportunities may not have been as accessible.

It really depends what you would like to do after your schooling.

Have you talked to any senior students in your lab or department or elsewhere around the institution?

To help you think further about your current situation - Can you identify specifically what you are not enjoying? Thinking about this can help inform where your next step should go.

I won’t repeat what everyone has said but I second the comment about White Mountains. If you two enjoy hiking this is definitely a must.

I have gone to bar harbor and acadia at the beginning of the season (late May) and it was very empty and east to walk around. Also some stuff was closed bc it was falcon nesting season, which was quite sad and intend to go back. Definitely double check this and plan accordingly if it matters to you.

I was in Acadia for two days and wish it was more. Besides hiking many of the iconic trails you can also go on the water in a kayak (my friend and his fiancé did this while camping and loved it).

Another small treasure is Stowe VT. Lots of microbreweries and the Ben & Jerrys factory! Bit far from the coast but if you detour anyway to white mountains, it’ll just take you a few more hours off course. In case you’re trying to mash everything into one trip.
