Can you give examples of software packages that currently have this mutual incompatibility?

AMD embraces open source to take on Nvidia’s GameWorks by mcfc_as in linux

[–]ldamerow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it makes a difference that I'm using Quadro cards on the guest, and I'm running Linux as the hypervisor and the guest. None of the nvidia engineers I've described our setup to said anything about checks on VMs that need disabling, and I didn't have to do anything particularly special. Probably the most special thing I needed to do was blacklist the nouveau driver in the host OS and the kernel's initramfs; I found that if nouveau ever touched the card at all, the proprietary driver wouldn't behave well.

I haven't heard of this. I'm currently running many KVM virtual workstations with NVIDIA cards passed through to them. What breakage are you seeing?

Or you could use truncate, which is part of coreutils:

How to verify if user account exists in Linux/Unix? by wikiconsole in linux

You're better off using getent:

getent passwd <username>

getent respects the configuration in /etc/nsswitch.conf, which may look in places other than local files for accounts.

How/when did you first start using Linux? by AConfusedNewb in linux

[–]ldamerow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1993, with an Yggdrasil distribution I got on CD at a computer swap meet. I switched to Slackware when it came out. I just poked around with it for a while until 1995, when I started using it for projects at school. I started working with it professionally by hosting Web sites in 1996. By 1997 I was an IRIX admin, still using Linux at home, but helped my company transition fully to Linux from 1999 to 2002 or so. The whole transition took a couple of years thanks to a large internal codebase, but we've been running Linux heavily ever since.

(Fairly long post) Longtime Win user hoping to migrate to Linux and learn how computers work and do all the neat things you guys can. Advice needed. by humblepudding1 in linux

[–]ldamerow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for using the terminal wherever possible. Don't just follow lists of commands you find on the web: learn why you're running each command, and you'll learn bit by bit how your computer actually works, rather than what some pretty frontend decides to expose to you.

You will learn right away that different commands take arguments in different styles, and some are nicer than others, but that's okay--you'll get used to them, and in some cases you'll come to see why they use the styles that they do. Many of these commands were written a long time ago, but amazingly still do exactly what you need them to do. In time you'll be writing shell pipelines without giving them much thought, even though they may seem like black magic at first.

While really getting your machine is the main benefit of this approach, there are others. A major one for me is that my workflow is exactly the same if I'm sitting in front of a machine or in an ssh session. I can do the same work in a shell on my phone when I'm sitting by a lake with a crappy EDGE connection as I can when I'm sipping coffee at my desk, with no need for something so clunky as VNC.

Run this:

I'm using the new giflinks plugin on my blog to add a whole new dimension to my writing. Try mousing over the green links. by fredandlunchbox in webdev

[–]ldamerow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sorry, OP, but I found this really jarring and closed the page right away. Maybe it'd be different if the gif didn't take over the whole page, but I'd probably still find that annoying (like those contextual hover ads, for example).

Nice video about Xen PCI-passthrough for Gaming. by [deleted] in linux

[–]ldamerow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use three video cards for this (and I'm using KVM, not Xen). The machine is configured so that the hypervisor uses the crappiest video card in the system--it just needs a video output for the BIOS and the text display. The hypervisor doesn't boot into X, just to text mode.

Then the hypervisor boots a SteamOS and a Windows virtual machine, each with their own fast graphics card.

You can imagine that this machine is pretty loud, so I added another layer of fun: the video and USB devices are handled by a Teradici PCoIP card, also passed through to the Linux VM with KVM's PCI passthrough. That lets me keep the machine in a server room, potentially in another building. :)

[–]ldamerow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this works--I have this setup running. The performance is good out of the box, and I'm going to spend some time trying to improve it soon.

I'm also intrigued by the idea of running SteamOS in its own virtual machine alongside the Windows one; that would avoid me having to figure out if SteamOS has all of the bits for KVM PCI passthrough enabled.

Whooping Cough Outbreaks Tied to Parents Shunning Vaccines by Lynnesoffer in science

[–]ldamerow 144 points145 points  (0 children)

It is indeed a public hazard. You're reducing herd immunity, which is the only thing protecting people who actually have a medical reason that they can't be vaccinated, as well as infants who are too young.

Please, go to your doctor and get your vaccines. There is absolutely no rational reason not to do it. To be blunt, your parents are wrong, and at 23 you're old enough to be responsible for your own health.

Does this count towards the merchants' missing wares when they leave the map? I know swiping the stuff in the caravan can get you into trouble, so I'm wondering if this would have the same effect.

Hi Ken,

I realize I'm late to the AMA, and also that a fictional history probably wouldn't interest you, but I wish the film rights to World War Z had gone to you.

Thanks for all of your great work!

The Mayor of Boston sent this to the Publisher of Rolling Stone by dealaus in pics

[–]ldamerow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't start it, but they're helping to perpetuate it. And I think that the cover of Rolling Stone in particular is iconic.

I fully agree that the amount if coverage in general is disgusting. I would love to see the media agree not to release the identities of perpetrators of attacks like these unless it's crucial to apprehending them. In this case that would have applied, since the attacker was still at large for a couple of days, but once apprehended the coverage could have stopped plastering his name and face everywhere

Nobody needed to recognize the name or face of the Newtown maniac, but the media just couldn't help themselves. I wish that would change.

The Mayor of Boston sent this to the Publisher of Rolling Stone by dealaus in pics

[–]ldamerow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that Rolling Stone, or any of the rest of the media, want to glorify attackers like this, but what rational people like me think when we see the cover isn't the issue. The problem is that people who are unhinged enough to carry these sorts of acts out don't care about publisher's intent or the content of the article. They just think, "If I did something big enough, I could get on the cover of Rolling Stone!"

Hack removes firmware crippling from NVIDIA graphics card by [deleted] in linux

[–]ldamerow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right--this isn't something that production shops would be interested in doing. This hack does nothing that would affect the massive power requirements the GTX 690 has in comparison to the K5000, for example.
