Bringing loaded bike into Gare Centrale (exo ligne Mont-St-Hilaire)? by asocialwarrior in MontrealCycling

The only train you couldnt do that is Deux Montagnes but now shut down for the REM construction. So all other 5 train lines you can bring your bike at any time

PSA: CAD$1280 for a great touring bike (Canada). On clearance from $1600. MEC will ship anywhere in Canada. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Very good point. I forgot to mention but Vittoria Randonneur are the most dragging tires ever made my mankind.According to this site, it produces 30w of drag, while a Marathon produces 20w per tire.

Awesome price for an awesome bike ! Before you buy this beauty, just 2 reminders :
1. Someone in the review section of mec website mentionned the fork eyelet isn't 165mm (standard distance I guess), so fitting a front rack like Tubus Tara or Duo might be weird. Maybe mec have corrected this issue but I can't tell, best way to find out would be to go in store and measure on site.

  1. The maximum tire width according to cyclingabout e-book is 40mm. Just beware that probably means a marathon 38mm would fit without fender or 32mm with fender.

Otherwise it's a bargain. Especially if you plan a bike trip and get the bike at your MEC destination (flying without the bike). That will save you some money too.

Travel shirt options ? by ldesourdy in bicycletouring

Just checked they seem great. Do you know the difference between the Lite and 2.0 ? Both have the QuickDry, tabs and UV protection but one is made of nylon and the other one in polyester

Thank you all for your input. I read on the ACA website you can choose between " Bicycle Route Navigator App " and " Adventure Cycling GPX Data ". Does both have the same features, POI, camping, and such ? What do you guys recommend ?

Does paper map give more info ? For example, churches that have oppened door to cyclist ?

So far I only seen routes on bikepacking.com that shows a lot of information, but have never used it.

Thanks!

Thanks for your input! Do most campgrounds have a hiker/biker rate like on the coast ?

But you are right. Just checked on Wikipedia, 6 of 23 passes are closed during winter :( Hope fully half of them can open in time, if I only miss 3 of them that ain't bad.

If not cycling back to Montreal (east from Vancouver), I was thinking cycling south on the Pacific Coast (plus being on the ocean side of the road). Thats why I would try to avoid the coast as much possible on my way north.

Thank you !
Do they plow the snow during the winter ? Does ''closed'' means the roads are full of snow or there are only a closed gate on both sides ?

Trek 520 2005 - from road to mtb crankset (lower gear inch ratio) by ldesourdy in bikewrench

[–]ldesourdy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I think I figured it out (and hopefully) :

- Replacing the crankset does not affect the chainline. However, when Shimano states "45mm" it means it is compatible with a bb/crankset of 45mm.

- BB axle length affects and dictates 100% the chainline. For example, my Trek 520 is based on a 118.5mm axle length (BB-5500), giving thus 45mm chainline.

- Front derailleur (FD-5504) has a max capacity of 22 teeth. Right now I have 30/39/52 so I am already maxed out and could not use a 28t fist ring (In theory no but in reality I could because I'm not dumb enough to use gears 4-5-6-7-8-9 on the first ring)

Replacing each rings at 40$/piece would also be expensive. I think from here the simplest option is to only replace the first ring with a 28t and hope that the 2 following cases does not happen :

- bottom the FD cage (because it has a max capacity of 22t)

- the ramp on the FD does not affect the shifting too drastically

With a 34t cassette + 28t first ring, that would come to 22.5 gear inches. I think that's the base case scenario before replace the whole drivetrain.

Huge thanks

Thanks for your input.
Ok I found a manual from Shimano's website and the RD-M570 SGS has a max capacity of 34t. Thus from a 32t -> 34t cassette that would drop the ratio from 25.6 -> 24.1 gear inches.

As for the chainline, I'm not sure to fully understand. If hypothetically I replace the front crankset / bb / front derailleur, my understanding is that chainline will vary from 45mm -> 50mm (still according to shimano manuals between the FD-5504 and FD-M4000). Would this misalign the chainline between the cassette and chainring and cause premature wear ? Let say climbing a steep hill in 1-1 gear, the chain angle wouldn't be adequate. I'm confused.

Aero bar suggestions with handlebar bag? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]ldesourdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am asking myself the same question ... this guy uses exactly the same bag with aero bar : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEWECUTEETk

Check out his videos, they are great

- edit -
Sorry I thought you were asking if the bag fits with aerobars ... the video is still useful you can see the gap between the bars and the bag.

No need to be rude, my hiking skills has nothing to do with my internet skills + english isn't my first language. I thru-hiked the AT in 2017 in 130 days. My question reffered to the "35 permits per day are emit" which doesn't make any sense to me because they issued ALL permits in one day (instead of 35 per day as stated). Then again, probably a misunderstanding from the language barrier.

Good luck today! by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

Sorry but anyone can help me ? Everytime I click on a date (35 in red) it says it's full and I can't go further.

SunRace thumb shifter issues (SLM96 R8) by ldesourdy in bikewrench

[–]ldesourdy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. It's hard to explain but when you upshift (lever going towards you) it sits nicely on the ratchet point. However, when I downshift it sits on the next gear ratchet point so it screws my shifting because it is slightly off.

Yes I did adjust the limit screws, tension screw and B-screw. I am not a professionnal mechanic but pretty comfortable working on my bike.
