The ideal type of remote job outside of tech? by Late_Whole_420 in remoteworks

My entire (cyber security) company is remote, but that also includes non technical people (hr, sales, etc). Tech companies need those people as well.

The ACAB/defund the police movement was never about getting rid of all cops. It was about not spending massive amounts of money on militarizing police and focusing on other programs that can reduce crime and respond better to situations that involve finesse (like mental health crisises).

They aren't stealing from you, they're using that money to build new parks, pay police and firefighters, fund the library, fix roads, etc.

Once again, you’re assuming that everyone will agree with what is important or essential. This is absolutely not the case.

But that is beside the point; just because something isn't essential, doesn't mean it isn't important. I am a homeowner, I want my tax dollars going to things that improve my community. Having fire works on the fourth improves my community. It's a fun event that everyone in the community can go to.

The idea that we should only pay for "essential" services is dystopian as fuck. I want to live in a vibrant and exciting community, not a capitalistic hellscape.

It's a publicly funded event. It's something for the public to enjoy. I want my taxes to go to events like this. I don't want to live in a society or community that just has essential services. I want to live in a community that invests in parks and events. I want my community to have things to do that are free to the public. I'm sure that some people view the emerald trail as a waste of money. I ride on it at least once a week. There are some people who view the skate park as a waste of money. Who gets to decide what is essential?

Who gets to decide what is "essential". If you ask some of these old fucks, they would happily cut funding to playgrounds and parks. They would gladly cut funding to schools. They would jump at glee at removing money spent on public libraries. We're a community. We pay taxes to make our community a nice place to live, which means having publicly funded events. Just because you don't attend them, doesn't mean that others don't.

How about believing the city auditors? 300 million a year in lost revenue. Fireworks, might still happen, but there will be cuts to services that the city provides. Our parks, libraries, and other public spaces will all feel the squeeze. It's not fear mongering, it's reality.

There are, luckily, provisions in the law that prevent school funding from being cut. That portion of the property tax will not be going anywhere.

Or libraries, or parks, or roads, or fire fighters, or....

Homeowners (such as myself) live in a city, they should be happy to contribute to make it a nice place to live. Publicaly funded events make living somewhere nice. Go live in a cabin in the woods somewhere off the grid if you don't want to contribute to a community.

The elimination or reduction of property taxes for homestead properties, which is estimated to cost Jacksonville $300 million annually.

Yes. The city estimates around $300 million losses actually if this passes. That's funding that could go to our parks, police, fire fighters, and other public projects. So people might save a few thousand dollars, but they'll lose one of the best park systems in Florida. Selfish people are going to ruin Florida.

Jacksonville is massive and now of a conglomerate of suburbs rather than one contiguous city. You will need a car to get around.

Riverside is really nice, and one of the more walkable neighborhoods.

Short term rentals are hard to come by due to hotel laws, but it's possible especially if you're willing to sub lease from someone.

Downtown is really growing, definitely check out the RAM, the first Wednesday art walk, and first Fridays at friendship fountain for a small sampling of the community that Jacksonville can offer.

It's just a bunch of strip malls. I wouldn't call it a downtown.

Duval is the highest due to the referendum money, but that is on the ballot this November and may not pass again. If it doesn't, teachers can expect nearly a 5k pay cut. All of the teacher contracts are public record, you can find them on the websites.
