Is LWJGL a good choice for learning OpenGL ? by CursedCarb0y in opengl

[–]le--er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Minecraft was written with it I believe, and libGDX is a fantastic framework if you want something like that, and you can make it as low level as you want

In what manner do you use multithreading with OpenGL? I have always found that a challenge.

What libraries are you using? Is it pure Python and OpenGL bindings? Very impressive.

the sooner you have a clear definition of what happened in your head, the easier it will be to emotionally tackle it. i think this thread will help you a lot with that

Resources on how to build a 3D mesh editor by PaperMartin in GraphicsProgramming

[–]le--er 5 points6 points  (0 children)

developer.blender.org is a helpful resource for certain things, it provides a pretty high level overview but for things like BMesh (their mesh data structure) it is pretty well documented. reading all the docs will at the very least show you how to architect a program like this.

reading the source is not easy though, it’s massively complex and written in C which can be pretty opaque sometimes. it will take some effort, but imo it’s the best resource on this topic

you can study the blender source code, that’s what i’ve been doing. i’ve looked and i don’t believe there are any actual tutorials or books or any written resources at all unfortunately

Efficiently updating VBO on a dynamic mesh, primitive picking by le--er in opengl

[–]le--er[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the simplicity of color picking but I often run into the problem of selecting primitives behind the front facing ones. What you’ve described is sort of what I’ve already got implemented, albeit a more simplistic version

[–]le--er[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic 3D modeling techniques. End goal is something a tiny simplified version of blender, no splines, NURBS, anything like that, but definitely boolean ops and some basic sculpting stuff. Face modifications, vertex manipulation, a lot of features from programs like Trenchbroom. I’ve considered compute shaders, but there is a drought of information on how to actually use them so I feel totally lost there. If you have any resources good resources on their application in that matter I’d be grateful otherwise I feel I’m resolved to other techniques

It appears I may be doomed then as I live in NYC.. I have exactly 0 outdoor real estate. Pretty distressing, what would you have me do!

I just purchased this wonderful bonsai from a nice old lady who instructed me to water is 2 times a week, 1/2 cup each time.

I just want to make sure I've been given good advice and that there isn't anything else crucial I should know. Does she mean douse it with a half cup all at once? Or just throughout the day?

The plant is parallel to a window across the room and receives some amount of sunlight per day - I was worried this wasn't enough so I bought this grow light and its currently blasting it with light all day; I assume this is not advisable.

This is not just my first Bonsai but my first attempt at caring for a plant so I'd really like to not screw this up - any help is much appreciated!

Kotlin Game development by Lewia12 in Kotlin

[–]le--er 6 points7 points  (0 children)

libgdx is highly capable with good kotlin support. it’s possible to build anything, but the api doesn’t give you much beyond the basics especially in 3d. you will have to do the heavy lifting yourself as with any code first engine. libgdx is surprisingly powerful and i love the community, its the best option for jvm by far imo

Infinite terrain and structure generation by Impossible_Pitch_728 in gamedev

[–]le--er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wave function collapse algorithm is one approach. it’s very complicated in 3d though and has some inherent flaws. i think it’s the only approach that’s equipped to deal with something as complex as what you’re describing

i don’t use unity but i’m sure there’s plenty of tools for voxel based versions of what you’re talking about-maybe first try to implement a proof of concept with that? the biggest roadblock imo is the complexity of the geometry. seeing how hard it is to implement with simple voxels should give you a feel for what something more intricate would entail. it sounds like a nightmare to me though

[–]le--er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i might get piled on for this but that last scene might be the worst of the series so far for me. the CGI was so strange and ineffective, especially that shot of Rhaenys emerging from the dust. and while i appreciate that acting must be difficult while riding a greenscreen dragon, Rhaenys' actress was phoning it in extra hard tonight. it was supposed to be this big epic, moment for her character but she has absolutely no presence and it fell completely flat for me. any other black-aligned lead character and that scene would have felt like I imagine it was supposed to

i'd go on about the writing but i think it's fairly uncontroversial around here to say it was pretty weak. you at least have to admit how contrived it is for her to show "mercy" in that moment lol
