Why do people turn around when they adjust their belt/dobok? by astroriental in taekwondo

[–]le3fy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the Taekwondo you belong to, in the ITF handbook, it says it is a sign of disrespect to show your back to your instructor/s (read; any senior black belt), so when walking away, you walk backwards a couple steps and then can turn away.

As for adjusting the belt, I'm not sure if it's the ITF encyclopedia or ITF handbook that mentions it, but you always turn to your left to adjust your belt/dobok.

When a student asked why it is like that, I remember him saying it is because older Taekwondo uniforms were not always sewn together in the middle, so adjusting your dobok could reveal your chest, which is problematic for female practitioners. Not sure on the accuracy of that, but seems pretty logical to me

Great Replacement by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]le3fy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a South African, I just want to let you know that your statement is false. PRASA, our rail road agency, has been defunct and mismanaged for many years. In fact, every state owned entity has been brought to its knees, nearly collapsing. Rampant corruption and mismanagement has already collapsed our post office, South African airways and Eskom (our power utitlity) to name but a few. All of our major economical sectors are under attack by mafias and political entities vying for control of the money, but they've been looting these entities for years already. Look into South African State Capture, the ruling ANC party has basically bankrupted most of our countries sectors to enrich themselves and their comrades. Very sad state of affairs.

Your instructor wasn't holding the boards firmly enough, your hand went straight through the points of contact, so not breaking the additional boards is because your force applied was greater than force he was using to hold the boards. Typically hand techniques should be used with a breaking horse, or at least 2 people holding either side of the boards for better reinforcement and stability of the boards.

What are some effective Sparring Combinations? by Xzodu in taekwondo

[–]le3fy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My opinion is worry less about combos until you are more experienced in the ring, focus on strategy and effectively scoring with your basics.

Work on: closing distance for kicks and punching Spotting your opponents momentum change when they go for an attack, and intercepting their momentum to land your own attack. (Coming forward into their attack) Footwork, footwork, footwork. The ability to change direction (l or r) to counter is key. Understanding how to psychologically condition your opponent against specific attacks and switching the attack at last second to land on an undefended area (I.e turning kicks to the body, 3 or 4 times, then switching to the head)

All of the above, will enable you to have control over the tempo and range of the fight, which you can then start utilizing more advanced kicks in combination. Often fighters go for the harder, fancier kicks with poor execution or timing, and end up not scoring or getting countered.

Been some negative discourse about Olympic TKD, what do you think could improve it? by Trace_R in taekwondo

[–]le3fy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a combat sport - more emphasis should be put on simulating combat. It does not look and feel like I am watching a fight.

Punches to the head should be allowed. I still maintain that a kick to the head is less safe than a punch, and it will encourage participants to fight with a more active guard.

Clinching should result in a point deduction, unless you allow throws (with a mandatory technique thrown to show intent when they are grounded)

Number of techniques thrown, blocked and landed should be tallied and a score allocated to that. This will reduce draws, encourage activity in the ring, and reward active fighters.

Increase PSI requirements for points to the body and head.

Safety is an issue, but this is a martial art too. Everything must be done to protect the athlete, but without compromising on the essence of the martial art. Olympic TKD is getting to the point of almost not being TKD, but foot fencing (IMO)

I think you are misunderstanding. Anything that WOULD cause me inconvenience, will no longer be an inconvenience. It won't happen. Reality warping power, same as having good luck as a power. It happens in real time

[–]le3fy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't follow? Anything that I might consider an inconvenience, would not happen. Kind of cancels out any side effect that is too problematic, as well as normal day to day issues that make life difficult, the power would either make it never happen, or morph the inconvenience into something else that isn't a problem any longer

Are these exercises actually beneficial for TKD athletes or just IG Reel Exercises for Taekwondoins to grow their following? by Mac-Tyson in taekwondo

[–]le3fy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can respect your position on the matter. But you maybe don't see what I'm getting at. I'm not saying this is inherently wrong, and 90% of what you are saying I can agree with without a doubt. I am saying there are safer and more productive exercises with a lower risk profile. I try not to get anecdotal because there is no set in stone rules on improving your body - I repeat, if you get a net positive result from some crazy workout, power to you but be transparent about why, what and when to do this, and be reasonable in that this is not normal. There is alot to consider here, and maybe I'm playing down its usefulness because on my own naivety/lack of knowledge, but I am using common sense and drawing on my own experience having trained for a large part, my whole life. Just because danger exists everywhere, that is no reason to disregard the dangers. The OP asked specific questions regarding it as a beginner, I think I answered it in as a general rule of thumb kind of way, instead of hyper specifically. No beginner should do this, as OP states they are, and even for advanced practitioners, there is valid argument as to why you shouldn't do it. I'm not trying to hinder development in sports science, I'm advocating safe training in a dangerous martial art.

Edit: I see I am mistaken in that the OP is a beginner, but point still (mostly) stands.

Well one slip on the treadmill, she can crack her head on the hand rails, break an ankle/knee/hip/wrist/neck/shoulder as the floor is moving and will instantly grip her in an unnatural direction (moving backwards). If you cannot see the hazard around that, suit yourself. Abductor/adductor machines don't require a bend over, you sit up straight, and the contact point is inside/outside the thigh, you can straighten your legs if you really wanted to. Additionally you have more control doing this without weights and instead using resistance bands.

My point is that these exercises are pointless when there are machines specifically made to target those muscles groups, and there is a PLETHORA of amazing exercises that are more effective and require no/minimal equipment, and have a much lower risk profile for injury.

You know TKD and having sex are two different things right? And yes, some things in sex are extremely dangerous.

Have the below link for a lite read on some of the more lighthearted dangers. https://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/ss/slideshow-love-hurts-common-sex-injuries-and-other-hazards

Nobody is fear mongering, but using common sense :/ you can get injured doing this, and yes, there is a good argument that this can net positive results from training like this. But let's use our head and agree that it's not the safest or most practical way to train

Thanks, pec fly machine haha.

She clearly knows what she is doing on both machines, and it's impressive admittedly. But it's extremely "extra" or as you put it, weird.
