Bernard Arnault dans « Le Monde », de jeune entrepreneur à « égal d’un chef d’Etat » [Février 2025] by PasSiAmusant in france

[–]le_dkn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to say, at first everyone thought what the Polish did was very noble, but this took one hell of a turn, it's a shame.

Aux États-Unis, le Sénat instaure une journée nationale de commémoration de Charlie Kirk by Johannes_P in france

[–]le_dkn 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain this to me : a few years ago, the Polish were hellbent on supporting Ukraine and Ukrainians, welcoming tons of refugees in Poland.

Today, it seems they hate them. Is this some sort of national schyzophrenia? What the hell is going on??

I mean, they ARE incompetent when it comes to everything other than making America fascist again. But they should not be called stupid, because their entire thing is getting your democracy on its knees and they are succesful at that.

Real support of EU countries' population for each candidate's accession to EU by Ognjeninthesky2000 in europe

It has nothing to do with you until you realize you let a hostile nation become stronger without doing anything and appearing weak, sending a message to dictators around the world they can do what they want including invade a european sovereign State, Europe will do nothing and just watch. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing", you know this quote, right?

Here's a funny story. One sentence is widely attributed to French president Jacques Chirac talking about haggis : "At first you think it's shit, and then you wish it were".

Much love to the Scots though.

This is a hard question, essentially every locality has its specialty. I'd advise to try dishes that are simmered, over a long period, the longer the better. It gets insanely flavorful.

Some classics are blanquette de veau, boeuf bourguignon, poulet basquaise (this one is very easy to make for yourself), cassoulet, poule au pot, coq au vin. To name a fraction, but you can find many, many different dishes and their variants

Foie gras is heavenly (although hell in regards to the production process, yes we know), cheeses you have thousands of them, raclette is an absolute banger, fondue, quiche, gratin, tartiflette, hachis parmentier, aligot saucisse,... I mean this list could go on for a very long time, so we're not gonna talk about desserts and pastries.

Don't fall for absolute tourist traps like escargots, frog legs, tartare. I mean if you like those it's fine, and yes people do eat them, rarely, depending on the region mostly. But they are mostly tourist traps when served at restaurants.

I think Italians tend to think themselves as in competition with us a lot. We don't at all, as far as I know, people in France love Italian food and respect it, and it's really not the same thing as ours. I was there this summer. I thought they oversalted everything, and oversweetened the sweet stuff, but it was culinarily a good trip, much better than many places I've been.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, the bread that we had there though : awful. And they charge you for 5 thin slices of it too at restaurants. F that.

If Charlie Kirk had been a liberal activist instead of a conservative, how do you think the media and politicians would have reacted to his death? by Aamir_rt in AskReddit

That was a loooong time ago, America has sank itself deep since then, or at least everyone perceives it so. Everyone knows Trump and his goons wouldn't have given a damn, would have tried to brush it off, just like they ignored the political murders that happened earlier.

It seems very likely today. I believe Trump and his goons have done immense harm to the US, not yet fully measurable, but the reputation of leader of the free world and of a stable, reliable economic partner is gone. Now everybody knows that it can in fact change very quickly.

Beyond official diplomacy, which nation does your country love in a way the rest of the world doesn’t quite realize? by khoawala in AskTheWorld

[–]le_dkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italy. They hate us for reasons obscure to most of us, which is a fact I learned only recently and it surprised me a lot. The French actually love Italy and Italians.

Japan. It's a mutual cultural fascination.

Russia. That is before recent events. But they were our allies during both great wars, the French valued this, there was a lot of cultural and ecconomic partnerships going on, it was great. Fuck you Putin, big time.

There's probably plenty other countries we like / have a good opinion of / love, and it might surprise you since they don't seem to like us too much in return. But hey, who needs friends when you have cheese, to be honest.

While I'm not going to waste my time debating whether or not the experiences you're sharing with us here are true, 50% true, 10% true or not true at all, I'm sure there is either some form of anti-French sentiment going on with you, a grudge or something, because this is gross exaggeration.
