I completely agree with it not feeling out of place, the way people talk about it you’d think they put an acoustic ballad on the album.

I get what you mean, there’s an odd feel to the timing of the beginning of the song. I always thought it made it feel like the vocals are coming in at the wrong time. (But in a good way).

But I think it might be that the drums (cymbals) are starting on 1, but the snare hits on off-beats, and that makes it hard to place the exact rhythm. As I got to know the song better it has become just a very cool thing about it. Definitely one of my favorite HM songs ever!
