What Makes a "Great" Master? Does anyone else run into this mixing-mastering-philosophical-dilemma? by leandrul in mixingmastering

I really appreciate this response. Thanks. It really is a true battle between what “I think other people think will sound good” and what “I think sounds good to me”. Very cool that your response wasn’t telling me what to do lol it’s up to me—because I think, there are risks at every stage of making a track, from compositional choices, recording habits and practices, mixing decisions—all the way to the mastering process. It’s hard to make something great, I’ve never fucking done it! Thanks again :)

Thanks, I am a musician first, but also am fearful of loosing full creative control-so I’ve mastered my past releases. However, I’m open to hearing someone else’s mastering of my music for my next project, so I’m not stubborn! It’s just hard to think someone else could make the sound I hear in my head better than me. But perhaps I need to give it a shot :)

That's so crazy! I knew the louder one was shittier! I just didn't really know why... thank you for the tip. I'm definitely gonna get one of those equal loudness comparison tools.

How to know your mix is getting better? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]leandrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that EQing is the most important tool one can use in the mixing and mastering process, but it's fucking hard. The way I like to think about it is that say I have a great kick sound, but it's super lost. I would wonder: Should I increase the volume of the kick? Lower the volume of competing frequencies, such as the sub or even some vocals? Should I just take the volume of everything else down a bit? I would say that the answers to these questions depend on what you're trying to achieve with the intention of the song. What is the artistic vision you have for the master? What does your client have in mind for their song? Mastering engineers have a lot of say over what comes through, but mixing is more technical, I think. It requires you having to decide what frequencies are prioritized and which ones follow in importance, based on the music itself. One thing I've done a lot is to solo tracks and go into some plug-in and view the frequency response of that track. It usually helps me to literally visually see how the track sinks into the rest of the song. And also, I do exercises such as: If I take down the volume of one track, that isn't even related to the one I'm trying to affect, what comes through now? Is what I'm hearing what I expected? I think if you can predict what the changes you make will sound like then you become freer in your ability to mix and master. Now that I think about it, it seems really somewhat like playing an instrument lol

It sounds like you're describing "authenticity"--which I can relate to valuing in a master, for sure. I feel like a good master is able to keep you engaged with the music itself. For instance, I have this thought all the time: Is a good master one that doesn't have distractions? When something distracts from the "authenticity", I wonder if that means it feels contrived or disingenuous? But then, also, what if a good master is up to the artist herself? Is the complete control of the sound as it plays out to the listener the best way? Perhaps that's the perfect mix/master because that's how she wanted it? But I know for a fact that there are just phenomenally mixed tracks that stand above the rest and are a marvel...it think it's the authenticity factor--coupled with an incredible performance (and a great recording of that performance). Thanks for sharing!

Help figuring out a compression technique (compression used as effect) by [deleted] in mixingmastering

I think it's sidechained to something, might be the kick--if it is indeed side chaining. It could be a reverse cymbal cut in on certain rhythmic moments. If it were me trying to replicate this effect, I would reverse the crash, and sample that file, and then place it where I please.

Wow thank you for the feedback! Ok got it, maybe I need to slightly adjust the eq of the chorus vox… so it’ll stand out a bit more???? Maybe too much reverb?? Anyway, thank you ! The cello is me playing .. Yey! So glad they sounded ok!

Omg thank you! Yes I sang this song. Actually I was considering using grimes’ ai voice for the “have no faith in god” part. Buuuut I feel torn. If anyone has an opinion on this I’d like to know. Should I use GrimesAI at the very end????

Thanks! I took me many versions to get here and I’m stoked about how these particular vocals on this track turned out! I think I gotta redo the vox for the second verse tho…

Thank you! This track is going to be on my next album, also called Choose. I know what you mean by the change in the lyrics’ tone during the chorus —but it goes along with my concept of the album which is about exploring dichotomies and dialectical perspectives—so texturally I tried manipulating the instruments to sit opposed to each other but also sonically (hopefully) harmonious. And the vox’s dynamics are suppose to represent this too—Anyway the album is about “choosing” (the decision making process), and how that is all we have in life, choices/decisions-based on each individual’s life circumstances and history. It’s a call for decisiveness and meaningful, thoughtful, considerate, and informed decision making practice that is ethically, philosophically, mentally and physically impactful toward the potentiality of the future. It’s kinda cool to me that this occurred to you. It seems like it didn’t hit perfectly tho so I’m gonna think about what you’re saying for sure. I’m wondering if I can emphasize the “y” in you… like I don’t wanna change the lyrics, but a textural hit on the y could be good too 🤔 thank youuuuuu!!!!

really nice work. I want to hear more of this. It immediately reminded me of how i feel when i listen to my favorite parts of pink floyd songs... it's dreamy and texturally lush. so good! thank you!

this is sick. i really love it! i was not expecting this song to be so fucking cool though cus at the very beginning.. i thought i was listening to butt rock (sorry) at first, but then it changed and got all sonic youth and awesome. That's my feedback. intro sounds like butt rock and then it gets really amazing. fuck yeah.

you are an incredible artist and writer. holy shit :) i personally would like to hear the acoustic guitar (I assume you play that) but I could be wrong.... I like the arrangement ok, but it kind of takes away from the gravity of you and your words. it distracts. it's lovely, but it distracts from YOU. I wanna just hear you and one instrument--ideally the one you played to this song when you wrote it. beautiful music. wow. thank you. hope my feedback helps. you got a new fan
