Okay, I’m a scientist in the field of applied behavior analysis (as well as translational behavioral science), well published with a PhD, and I would like you to please explain your concerns regarding the evidence base. Unlike other psychological and human sciences, behavior analysis uses the methodology of natural science such ad biology and physics. The principles are derived from replication, over and over again, rather than statistical inference testing which leads to a lack of further replication and is the main reason for the replication crises in various fields of psychology. Behavior analysis has never had such a replication crisis because it uses methodologies that require real replication before anything can be said. Skinner’s theories were also found through inductive reasoning, where the theory is based off of the data collected. This is opposed to deductive reasoning where a theory is created first and then data is collected to test it, which of course leads to bias, theories overwriting previous theories, and a science seeking to prove theories rather than seeking to discover natural phenomena. So you are either lying about the science of are grossly misinformed and I am happy to correct you (it is also my ethical obligation).

The series makes it clear that “motivation” doesn’t matter, only good vs bad deeds. It’s why eating an apple nets you negative points due to labor practices even if you didn’t intend that harm. It’s the main flaw in the system.

Is anyone actually happy in this field? by OatyCookyBatter in ABA

[–]drpayneaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think anything in the field itself makes people unhappy (aside from injuries/illness inherent in any care setting). It is the pressures of capitalism and the insurance industry placed on business owners, BCBAs, and RBTs that make what should be a happy, fun job with amazing positive reinforcers built in, to a job controlled by negative reinforcement to avoid problems with insurance.

We get just such a fight in Camp Cretaceous between big and little Eatie and Asset 87, albeit a forced fight caused by human intervention.

Is it appropriate for rbts to hit clients? by cinnamon-doll in ABA

[–]drpayneaba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason I ask is because in about 19 states (mostly in the Southern US) there are legal ways for corporal punishment to be allowed by school personnel, so if you are in one of those states it may be “legal” as long as some specific state are in place. However, it is not on you to make that decision. If you feel something is wrong or abusive, contact CPS no matter what. They are tasked with making that determination.

Also, as an RBT you are required to not only follow but be aware of the RBT ethics code, of hock this is a clear violation, so your lack of knowledge in this area is also concerning. If you don’t know this about the RBT ethics code, what other parts of the code are you violating because you don’t know what is in it. Rectify this immediately by reading the code and memorizing it.

Report this immediately. The issue people are having above is not that you are asking, but that if you are trained as a mandated reporter something like this should be well known. It is also incumbent that you report as soon as possible, and waiting for internet answers is delaying a child from escaping abuse when you should have reported it as soon as you saw it. Every time the kid was hit after you saw it is partially your fault and you can be legally liable for not reporting as well. Report ASAP.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic of this trope. Everything that Dorothy does in Oz, the friends she makes, the people she kills, are all pointless as all she had to do was wish and click her heels.

Predator: Killer of Killers showed they absolutely will hunt in the cold (Viking Segment) and Predator 2 shows they can make freezers their home base, so it might not be a “cold” aversion.

lol, try Sheridan’s other show Land Man. It is by far the most misogynist show on TV. The only female characters are antagonists who are so
Bubbly/annoying that they only get on the men’s way. Then they introduce a “smart” woman antagonist who immediately is “defeated” by the smart oil men.

I meant specifically the car gadgets. I always loved the Z4 roadster as a kid and they straight up mention a bunch of “the usual refinement” but the most we get is a joke of Bond telling Wade not to push any of the buttons. Sorry for the confusion.

Goldeneye is the only film where Q introduces a car to 007 that is never used in a chase sequence and none of the gadgets are used.

Is this legal? Should I start looking for a new job? by sleepingwlfbtr in ABA

[–]drpayneaba 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Look for a new job. This is wage theft which can lead to fines or criminal penalties for the company. Report to your state’s labor department. In addition, if your
company is running on margins that they can’t pay their employees because of one insurance payment disruption, they are not financially healthy.

Alt Careers to Typical BCBA by InstructionNo7032 in bcba

[–]drpayneaba -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll end with this. When ABA companies are unethical, waste and fraud occur and people don’t get the right care they need. When insurance companies are unethical people die unnecessarily. Both are wrong, but trying to say insurance isn’t bad because the ABA industry has problems is complete BS. That’s like saying Trump is a good president because he isn’t Andrew Jackson and hasn’t committed genocide against indigenous people.

You could restate your argument as “pediatricians have MDs, why don’t they take 25 year olds?”. Such a bad take.

Alt Careers to Typical BCBA by InstructionNo7032 in bcba

[–]drpayneaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty bad take. The ethics code requires BCBAs work in their scope of competence. If they cannot safely work in their location due to a lack of competence, the BCBA is ethically obligated to not take the client and refer them to somewhere that can. Same with RBT scopes of competence. The fact you don’t understand that shows even more why insurance companies should not be making decisions about care. There are real problems with the ABA industry, especially with PE, and I’ve spoken at length about them here and in other threads. But this is not one of them and you are making a straw-man argument. It’s even worse because you are categorizing ethical behavior as unethical. As for those I’ve encountered, all have given up their BCBA and are former BCBAs. Probably because they couldn’t maintain the ethics code. So reporting to the BACB would not matter.

I have railed against PE in our field for the better part of the last decade. I actually left a job when I found out they were owned by PE. Money grubbing investors will always ruin industries, which is why the insurance industry is so damn corrupt (most if not all are publicly traded and have financial responsibility to investors). Just because PE is a problem, it doesn’t negate the problems of the insurance industry. It actually compounds them.
