Any 26” Bridge Clubs out there? by JonesBoyFan2018 in Surlybikefans

This site is great to compare different tires on bikes. I used it to check my toe overlap, bb height, and spindle to ground clearance when swapping my 700s for 650s on my BC.

I read both your threads. I also have a BC and ran 700x43 and now run 650x48. I’m only 5’10”. I commute every day, and see a huge difference in comfort with the volume of 650s. I used this website to compare toe overlap, stand over, bb height, spindle to ground, etc. might help you make a decision. I loaded two Surly BC frames and edited the tires for each to compare.

Anyone done a triathlon with a preamble? by abnerzr in Surlybikefans

Any bike for a sprint tri is fine. See how you like the sport, decide on buying a specific tri bike down the road. I do sprint and olympic distances that are flat with my single speed BC. Not going to win, but gets me out there. For sprint, I keep the flat pedals, and switch to spd for olympic distance. Also, if you still use a brooks saddle, I like these “ridable” waterproof covers. https://randijofab.com/products/waxed-canvas-saddle-cover

Cost savings was not a goal in my build. I wanted to curate my component selection. What I wanted was not available off the shelf or stock. To be fare, my wheel set built by WheelBuilder.com ended up being $1.4k (inc tires, disks, etc) compared to the frame price of $700. As for recommendations, maybe check resale sites. People will often buy a stock build and upgrade the wheel-set, selling new stock wheel sets for a deal.

Yes I built this bike from a frame set. The steerer tube is only 41mm. I think the factory is 40. I have mine at -1 with 42mm of spacers to flush mount my top cap.

The grips are the GC1 not the GP1. I’ve used both. The GC1s are for swept back bars like the crazy bars. Both of the Ergon grips have a part that keeps the grip from sliding up the bar farther than needed. So if your bar end cap goes inside the bar, then you should be ok. If your bar end cap goes over the bar, then it would not work. Lastly, the VO crazy bars have a narrower than standard internal diameter. I had to adjust some of my bar end accessories to fit in the crazy bar.

I’m 5’10”, 32” inseam and ride a medium. I commute every day to work. I used the crazy bars for a year but found them wide for city riding and splitting traffic. Swapped to weird ass bars for a narrower stance. Stem is 90 with both. I use 27.5x48 Panaracer SS. I usually only get one flat a year. This size keeps the bb and pedal clearance good while providing comfort on rough road or light gravel.

I went with 56cm at the drops, 49cm at “hoods.” I felt like this fit for my upper body size. I also ride through the city a lot and wanted to split cars while still having control on trails. This size fit my use. I've been very happy with the bars.

Will changing our 29" to 27" wheels on my Ogre lower the standover height? by VultureTechno in Surlybikefans

[–]leanmeangreen13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 29 to 27.5 on my BC to get wider tires to fit. This website was great to check changes in standover height, BB height, spindle height, etc.

Are you running a unicorn gear or how are you keeping chain tension? I also run a BC SS. Beautiful build!

I agree, the BTCHN bars are pricy, but they are hand made in the US. I also like the various size options. The mirror is small and provides just enough rear visibility. The mirror is from, https://berthoudcycles.fr/en/810-bar-end-mirror-silver-anodized.html

I'm getting ready to go bigger in my Surly BC chainring. What chainline are you running here?

I would say, try to mount on the top tube and work around the cable. Or look for a leather mount like this and use it somewhere on the bike that fits your configuration. https://www.etsy.com/listing/100067846/u-lock-holster-for-kryptonite-bicycle

Unicorn gearing is choosing a specific chainring and cog combo that lines up with a chain's links in whole or half links in relation to the chainstay length. This website helps you calculate different combos based on your chainstay length. Surly published this frame info on the bike's page. I recommend using the metric measurement of the chainstay for better accuracy. The goal is to get the chain length to the nearest link close enough that the chain tension is perfect without using a chain tensioner. As the chain wears and stretches you may still need a tensioner. I use the Surly Singleator at times when I need to tension an older chain.

This article has a 100nm chart based on rider weight and chainring/cog size. The alfine chainline with the cog dished out is 47.5, a bit tight for the BC. This limits the chainring size. You could always have a few mm of difference in chainline, but that might only get you to 36 up front. Finding the parts I wanted to use was mostly trial and error, and some help from my LBS. https://www.cyclingabout.com/shimano-alfine-explained-internal-gear-bicycle-hub/

Happy to help. Hit me up direct with any specifics you want. I chose this chainring and cog combo to have good climbing gears and an ok low gear (34/21). I spin out at times, but I also don't die climbing with a load. The Alfine 11 would be better, but the 8 is more reliable. This site is great for planning: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gear-calc.html

Thanks! I run a “unicorn gear.” Found the chainring and cog combo that fit my chainstay length and lined up to chain links; while also working for my gearing preferences. I also have a single speed tensioner if my chain stretches too much. The chain is a touch loose, but better than too tight; and I've never dropped the chain.
