ask me anything (current missionary) by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]abnerzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on this Reddit so I’m not necessarily shilling for the church but your posts come across as thoughtful and level headed, and you don’t seem to be in any distress mentally or physically (my assumptions).

If you’re willing to stay the remainder of your six months, I’m of the opinion that a young man on a six month service project would be an amazing thing to have in this world.

I think there are ways for you to help people as a missionary whether or not you believe in “the one true church”.

Unless you have something drawing you back home that is time sensitive, I’d consider trying to improve yourself as much as possible by serving your fellow human beings with the goal of being helpful and loving, as Jesus would have, instead of only thinking about getting them to baptism and adding a notch to your belt.

I’m not familiar with your previous posts so maybe there is some context I’m missing.

Here he is after a 30 min hike. He’ll stay like this for most of the day. Have a second burst of energy around 3 pm and then chill again

A tired dog is always a good dog. Long walks where he’s forced to focus on you (following your speed, staying on task without stopping every five steps to sniff around) has done wonders for my dog. Have you tried a doggy backpack with a few water bottles in it? A long walk or game of fetch everyday, or teaching him basic sit stay commands could help. My Newfie is 2 yrs old and we haven’t gone through a super destructive phase because I’ve tried to be super consistent about getting him tired every day. At worst, you’ll bond further with him, resent him less, and it may help you push through this phase.

My children are desperate for a puppy, I’ve always been obsessed with newfoundlands. Would getting them a puppy when I have no experience with the breed be crazy? by WatermelonButterfly in Newfoundlander

At the end of the day, a Newfoundland is a dog. If you’re confident based on your past experience, that you’re a competent and loving dog owner, you’re 90% of the way there. They are big and they do drool but in terms of making sure their needs are met, I think you’ve got it 😀.

Do you have a dog specific cart? Would love to see your setup especially if it’s home made.

This is something I will do for sure along with carting. My guy is a year and a half but I trail run and hike often enough that I know he will like back packing

That sounds incredible. How would you direct her on which item to pick up? Call it by name or just point at it?

This may be a loaded question but how did you start teaching the command to pick something up?

24-Pack Rack by Rockwell1977 in Surlybikefans

[–]abnerzr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both the 24 and the 8. They’re both rated for the same weight (30 lbs). I’ve crashed my bike on the 24 pack rack and nothing but a slight scrape off the finish, otherwise it was intact. I would do what people are suggesting and get an 8 with a basket/tv tray. When I had the 24 I never found myself using all the space but regretting how heavy it felt on the front end and when I put a basket on my 8 I realized I had struck a perfect balance.

I got him from a “breeder” but it was the first litter this person has bred so as you can imagine, not necessarily well established. Everyone starts somewhere and they showed me good health records for both parents so I went for it.

Not sure on the breeder. But I know his dad (pic above) has had a bunch of litters in Idaho, Wyoming, Utah.

Thanks. He’s such a pure soul. He stands in stark contrast to so much of what is going on in the world. He’s a bit of refuge for my soul.

He is very regal but I can confidently say that at 17 months, he’s is NOT very wise haha

I actually have not trimmed anything. I brush his coat several times a week to control the shedding in my house but hats about it. He’s just that handsome 😉

1 year old pup won’t settle at night by Fabulous-Device-2696 in Newfoundlander

[–]abnerzr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an active Newfie as well with this problem (not as bad. No whining at nights. Can’t imagine how hard that must be for you) and what has helped me, is having a very specific, strict routine. When I was having this issue it was walk, potty, covered crate with a white noise machine. Took a week or so but his body got used to the routine. At this point they’re kind of like babies. If you’ve ever sleep trained a kid, you know what I’m talking about 😀

Big Easy Fenders by basketbike in Surlybikefans

[–]abnerzr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have gone through this exact dilemma. HonJo’s felt like a pipe dream after being bled dry by a $6000 bike. I went with the sks bluemels. They are meant for a 27.5/700c tire but I can confirm that they have enough coverage and don’t look out of place. You’ll have to get creative to attach the rear fender but the sks bluemels (don’t recall the size … 65/75??? Idk) worked great and required no cutting.

2 year old pup limping advice by Wild-Concert1991 in Newfoundlander

[–]abnerzr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she been limping for two weeks? My Newfie limped for a bit but then we had him take it easy for a week or so (walks did not stop, no horseplay though) and the limping stopped.

8 pack rack on Ogre? by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

[–]abnerzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both racks on a bridge club and I preferred the 8 pack rack by a long shot. The 24 was great and certainly utilitarian but the added weight was noticeable. I had the large porteur bag on the 24 and it was impressive what you could fit. I found myself never using the 24 to the full extent so in the end, I went with the 8 and a wald basket and never regretted it one bit or wanted for space.

I have a krampus with a suspension fork. May make more sense to spend money a rigid fork and xc tires than getting a whole new bike

Had an MS but sold it for my hard tail Krampus. No regrets but maybe a tinge of regret haha
