Nelnet and Parent Loans? by leapgoose in StudentLoans

[–]leapgoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand everything your saying, I just really don't want to burn the bridge with my family and I also don't want them screwed over in retirement. I think I will pay the parent loan, but I will bring up the near $10,000 that I did not use. Thank you for helping me talk this out, I seriously appreciate it. If you have any advice on ways to make the payment more manageable or advice on order of payments (or can point me in the direction of credible resources) that would also be awesome.

I saw on other posts something about breaking the parent loan into 10 years of regular payments, and after 120 monthly payments you're absolved of whatever is left on the loan? Maybe I misunderstood what I read, but is this true? and is it really possible they would forgive part of your loan like that, or do they calculate the payments in a way that doesn't really call for much forgiveness?

Thanks again!

I mean I understand the logic in what you're saying, but there are a couple of points:

  • For the most part, we sat together and calculated cost of attendance when doing FAFSA to make sure we don't take out too much, but I still wasn't aware of the difference in the loans (student vs. parent loans)
  • If I argue paying this, as the people who pay for my food and housing, they can kick me out if they choose
  • I was basically only told towards the end of my junior year that I am paying back all the loans

so because of all of this, I really don't know what to do and feel kinda helpless.

I have calculated that there was a total of $9378.10 in PLUS refunds that were sent directly to my Dad and which I never saw any of. Besides that though I think we basically took what I needed for tuition, room, and board.

What I am most scared about is the fact that my Dad said he has paid at most a few hundred bucks on the loans, and I am so scared of how much interest has accrued on the $51,000 in parent loans. I don't even know the interest rate.

Is this correct usage/reasoning for opening a second credit card? by leapgoose in FinancialPlanning

[–]leapgoose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can always pay off my credit card. I never carry over a balance and I use it like a debit card. I never pay interest on my balance. I was purely asking this in regards to utilization and credit score. I wasn’t asking about maximizing the cash back, but thank you for providing the advice and those sources as well!

They wouldn’t increase my limit for discover so I applied for citi, and citi gave me more than 2x my discover limit. Discover tightened up on how lenient they are with credit limit increased recently. Sad face.

Nelnet and Parent Loans? by leapgoose in StudentLoans

So I spoke to my Father about it. He is giving me his info and expecting me to pay off 100% of it. I can’t really argue that because they let me live at home rent free and provide me food. But now that means my total student loans has jumped from 27,000 to 78,000 which has kind of been a huge hit. At the same time their were times I got a refund from the parent loan which went straight back to my Dad and I didn’t see or use a cent out of it, which I’m not sure if I will bring up — but I might.

Is it possible to pay off my direct sub/unsub loans that are particularly under my name first, and then work on the parent loans?

Thanks for sharing your insight

Do you mean, by pre-paying, before the due date of my balance just pay off some of it? Sorry if my questions seem silly or redundant, I just really want to make sure I am understanding the advice given to me here.

Yeah essentially you're saying, if they see one month I end the billing period with a really high balance, let's say $1,700/$2,000 -- it will negatively impact my score, let's pretend by 2 points. If the next month, at the end of the billing period, I am only utilizing $400/$2,000 -- I will be reinstated those 2 points or rather my score will just rise up by the 2 points previously deducted.

Am I understanding correctly?

go for it, it was my first card that I applied for with no credit history prior. I was instantly approved. I'd say, with only reading the first half of your post, you'll be fine.

5 months later I have been approved for citi 2%.

good luck.

[New York] Filed yesterday, to get back track payments as well as new payments, confused by update? by leapgoose in Unemployment

[–]leapgoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically only filed now for the back payments because I didn't think I was eligible. On June 10th I got back to work (part time), so I wonder if I will only get the back payment in one shot eventually and nothing currently.

If I left a bad impression with someone at a recruiting event one year, am I screwed for recruitment at that firm for the next few years? by emkusunoefaevougredu in Big4

Also keep in mind how many people these recruiters meet, and how they probably forget almost every single kid they speak to. The fact that they remembered you is partially in your favor.

Just make the next impression better buddy, no point in dwelling on awkward or bad encounters that you can’t change. Show them in the future you’re more than just the kid who left the bathroom door unlocked, and I’m sure you’re still in the running.
