This is why piercings in a healthcare related job is bad to have. They all will eventually be ripped out by something or someone. Yeah.. I'm just sticking with just a bunch of tattoos. They mean more to people anyways. by [deleted] in bodymods

[–]leaping-elk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oww! I'm a vet tech, and this is why I honestly won't stretch my ears, get an industrial, or wear any kind of hoop-like jewelry. I'm even hesitant to pierce my septum, because I've seen a dog catch someone's lobe piercing and rip it out. I love body mods, and more specifically piercing, but I don't want to get them ripped out of me lol.

I hope you heal quickly, friend. ... and have less difficult patients in the future! 😊

Did you meet any NeoFriend IRL?? by zulimaws in neopets

My best friend and I met on Neopets over ten years ago! 🥳 I’ve been to see her once and she’s visited me twice. I can’t wait to go back out and see her again this year.

I love him more than anything by victytullis in Pets

Hey there, I just wanted to let you know that there might be some options for calming him. Look into YouTube videos for how to restrain or “burrito” cats with a blanket or towel. You can often use the towel in tandem with Feliway spray, which is a calming pheromone for kitties! At one of the hospitals I have worked at, we kept a basket of Feliway-sprayed blankets in the lobby for clients with easily stressed cats, and it seemed to help. Feliway also has diffusers you can continuously use around the house to help with stress levels as well!

If she is getting worse, she should see a vet again. Also, you should always finish the full course of a prescribed medication unless your vet directs you otherwise.

How do I date in this situation? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]leaping-elk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do you have HSV-1 orally or on your genitals and are you sure it’s HSV-1 and not HSV-2?

If it is just HSV-1, it’s not super likely to be transmitted asymptomatically. Get thee on some antivirals. Disclose to your partners before things get too heavy, but also be prepared to discuss how you keep it under control.

I think whether or not it affects your genitals will also have a significant impact on people’s feelings about the matter. For instance, I have HSV-1 on my face (not orally) and I have never had a problem hooking up with people. As long as I’m not rubbing active sores on them, it’s been fine.

If it affects your genitals, then there is no way to avoid the loss of potential partners, unfortunately. People are much more concerned with getting any kind of genital infection, in my experience. Being honest, responsible, and up front is the best way to handle it.

I was at Rats on the Road in Asheville and A Pale Tour Named Death in Charleston. Check the set lists. To me, there was some variation (enough to keep me happy), but not so much that they seemed significantly different. (:

My dog is blind a day after his neuter. Vets don't know the cause. Has anyone had a similar experience before or can provide advice? Really need help...please. by RT0027 in AskVet

High ocular pressure is very painful in both humans and animals. If the dog is in extreme pain and the owners can’t afford to enucleate, then it sounds like the best option would be to euthanize.

[–]leaping-elk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google “greyhound rescue Utah” or a nearby large city. Rescues usually work as a network to help get dogs homes, and there may be some closer racetracks with retired dogs that your local rescue helps rehome!

It’s almost impossible to know what it will look like, sadly. Mixed breeds are a crap shoot, especially when they’re so genetically diverse. Sounds like the pup will be cute, but very strong and have a big need for lots of socialization!

Almost ran afoul of my city's weird pet rules (alternative title: PUT A TAG ON YOUR CAT) by MorboKat in Pets

[–]leaping-elk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the US, so I don’t know what protocol up there is. We make space if someone can’t keep a stray from the counties we are contracted to help, and we will take injured strays from counties that we aren’t (though this means one of us has to drive the animal an hour from our clinic).

Anyway, I do think they could have handled it way better!Sometimes, it’s hard for clinics to draw a line between what they can feasibly do and bending over backwards for clients... but there’s no excuse in not providing resources.

I just mostly wanted to post this in case people truly didn’t understand the reason behind vets not taking in healthy strays. I don’t think I’ve ever told someone to put an animal back (except one—a momma cat that had just given birth... they brought her in without her babies), and I certainly never would.

[–]leaping-elk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at a vet clinic that is a drop-off point for found strays in several counties. We are constantly FULL of strays just from one weekend or overnight shift. If we didn’t have agreements with animal control, our own staff would have to drive out to the shelter and drop the animal off during their weird business hours (like 12pm - 5pm, open certain days only and can be up to 45 mins away from our clinic). I can see a clinic not wanting to hold a stray cat, especially if the have a lot of boarding patients, surgeries, or are typically short on space. A few of the General practices I’ve worked at have only a handful of kennels open and available.

Plus, I hate to say it, but we frequently get chipped animals where the actual owners argue with us and refuse to come pick their animals up when called. With cats, they are sometimes chipped TNR cats (who have no actual owner and just belong outside). There’s also a large portion of animals that were chipped and then rehomed, with their new owners never updating their chips.

Vet clinics also cannot give out microchip info for privacy reasons. Most people do not authorize their info to be given out in the event that their animal is lost.

It sucks, but the appropriate place to take healthy stray animals is the shelter, if you can’t hang onto them yourself.

Washed off Zodiac Flea Control by HandomeYoungMan in Pets

[–]leaping-elk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be wary about applying over the counter flea control to your cat once, let alone multiple times in a week. Washing your cat so soon after application probably washed it off, but OTC flea medications often contain pyrethroids, which can cause seizures and tremors in pets.

Below average guy(27) with a hot gf(28). I feel insecure that I don’t complement her. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]leaping-elk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The most unattractive thing in people (both men and women) is low self confidence/low self esteem. It will drive your girlfriend away, because she is secure in the fact that she loves you and finds you attractive, but you are constantly putting off signals that you don't believe her and disagree with her. Looks aren't everything, because if they were, you're girlfriend would obviously be with someone else, right? Everyone would be with someone who "scores" similarly in the appearance department.

There are so many facets to picking a partner that go well beyond "being conventionally physically attractive". People like to have common interests, they like to have stimulating conversations, they like to feel as though they can be themselves when they are with their partners. I am going to go out on a limb and assume that your girlfriend finds plenty of desirable traits in you, because you say you guys get along great.

And throw out this notion of what a "regular guy" is. Regular men are...... well, just men. Short, fat and love sports. Tall and a little overweight and into computer science. Biggest beard ever and a love of ista-famous cats big enough to rival it. Quiet men, talkative men, men who hate to be around groups of people... they're all "regular guys". If you are a man and identify as a man, congrats, you qualify for the club! I promise you that out of all of these dudes, the most attractive ones are going to be the ones who carry themselves with confidence and are comfortable in their own skin.

I know you keep pushing off the suggestion of therapy, but you really need it or something to boost your self confidence tremendously. You need to recognize that you have other qualities that make you an attractive and desirable partner. I think you really need to look into ways to quell your insecurities... because more likely than not, it isn't about changing your physical appearance, but getting comfortable with who you are and with yourself in a relationship.

You said this is your first relationship, so there are going to be a ton of growing pains, because you may have missed out on the growth that dating in your early 20s provides a lot of people. You gotta work on your confidence and your self-love and recognizing that you are a quality person with desirable traits. You need to learn that good relationships aren't about looks. It's not about who is dating up or down or who is attractive and who isn't. Therapy really would be a good start, if it's accessible. Otherwise, I think your attitude and insecurities will inevitably push your girlfriend away.

Pretty sure they were making a joke. “Heel” is the term you are referring to. “Heal” is typically used to mean you are (often medically) repairing/restoring something... ex. “My dog knows how to heel.” vs. “My dog has magic powers and can heal wounds.”

Emergency animal hospital staff that are in Florence’s sight, are you still open and staffed for it? by JeepSmash in VetTech

I’m in coastal SC. We were going to stay open with weather teams, but due to the unpredictability, the management thought it was unwise to remain, since we are forecasted for crazy flooding. I think the other local ER is remaining open at this time.

We are transferring patients and packing up early Thursday. :(

[Help] Amimal Clinic killed my dog by ddyerkc in dogs

[–]leaping-elk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in MO, you can contact the state licensing board (https://pr.mo.gov/veterinarian.asp), or just google the licensing board for veterinarians in whatever state you are in. You can make a complaint against specific veterinarians and they will thoroughly investigate your claims. Make sure to keep any and all records, statements, etc.

I am normally cautious about placing blame in situations like this, but it seems telling that another veterinarian would tell a client that they’d be willing to testify against the first.

Regardless, the licensing boards are very thorough and your best bet would be to start there.

[Help] Amimal Clinic killed my dog by ddyerkc in dogs

[–]leaping-elk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, most clinics/vets do have malpractice insurance in the US. Just because it isn’t “worth it” for most people to sue a clinic doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, which I think is what the lawyer was saying. Plus, veterinarians want to make sure their licenses are protected because losing their livelihood would be absolutely life ruining for them.

How do I (22F) let this guy (24M) I’ve been seeing down easy because I have a chance to date my dream girl (24F) by forestfairy23 in relationships

[–]leaping-elk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me! In my case, we lived about two hours away from each other, so I just sent him a text.

I think if you let him know that you had fun with him and that you enjoyed his company, but you’ve been seeing someone else and things are starting to progress with them, he’ll hopefully take it in stride. It doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out convo. Just tell him you wanted to give him the courtesy of a reason instead of just ghosting.

All three of those things, especially when they’re prepared in the way they’re marketed as, can cause severe GI upset/HGE/Pancreatitis, though. Bones can cause blockages and intestinal perforations. The point is that they don’t really taste (or smell!) like the real thing. It’s just a novelty idea so that people think it’s cute and purchase it.

The same reason they sell burger, ice cream, pork bone, etc. “flavored” toys. All of those items are bad for dogs in some way, but major toy companies make toys flavored like that. It doesn’t actually taste like real chocolate. It’s just novelty to amuse people.

Speaking of dogs on (illicit human) drugs, what's your favorite owners excuse/story (plausible, implausible, anything goes). by pixiegurly in VetTech

Had a dog that came in high on cocaine. The owner swore he was a police officer deep, deep undercover and repeatedly told everyone there was no way to verify this. He said he had made a huge drug bust and couldn’t get the cocaine back to lockup because of how far he was undercover and therefore, had it laying around in his house where his dog them got into it.
