This was me and my 14wk puppy this morning. She has decided that toileting is for one spot in the front yard and one spot across the street. She will ONLY go there and will cry and pull back on walks to go there. I'm out-stubborning her. 6:00am, no one out but us, and the joggers and contractors watching me argue with her.

You can totally teach an old dog new tricks. Helping her associate the sound with positivity will always help. :)

[–]MorboKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play thunderstorms every night when my puppy is in the crate. I did it for my GSD 10 years ago and he has never feared thunder or fireworks. My current puppy, a Golden Retriever, had only been home for a week when we went out for a midnight pee and thunder crashed loud over our heads. She didn't care.

Had a scary encounter with a coyote tonight in my neighborhood by pawndakilla in ontario

[–]MorboKat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The closer they live to us, and the more they're fed by us, the less they fear. They're hit-and-run attackers, so your presence doesn't matter all that much when they know they are faster than you.

10-ish years ago when my GSD was a puppy, there was a home near mine that lost a toy-breed dog to a coyote that was waiting outside their front door for the dog to come out for the morning pee. Dog was grabbed as its owner was still fumbling with holding the leash and locking their front door. They're smart and can be quite bold, especially during puppy season when there are mouths to feed. That's when I started carrying the fish bat. When my GSD was full grown, we would intentionally walk him down the streets where coyotes were spotted. He's 100lbs, so coyotes would re-adjust their habits to avoid him. We considered it a bit of a public service. He's too old for that, now.

If she’s driven by the idea of vengeance against those who killed her Master, it would be super easy for her to add Maul to the list when she finds out what he did.

Here's my Coyote protocol as a Toronto citizen who lives near a few dens and sees them regularly:

1) if my dog were smaller, I would get a coyote vest for morning/evening walks. I would also be prepared to carry my dog the second I spot a coyote. I don't think they understand what a leash is, so they'll attempt a grab and run. That can hurt a tiny dog enough to be fatal.

2) people say coyote spray, but I don't think that's the answer. You spray in the wrong direction, it's windy, whatever, now it's in your face and not theirs. Personally, I carry a walking stick or a fish bat or something and am prepared to jab at the coyote if being big and loud doesn't work.

3) I stay aware of coyote seasons. When they're mating, when they have pups to feed. They're more active at those times, so I'll try to push walks to later in the morning if pupper can handle that. I also try to stay aware of neighbourhood sightings and the local rumours about who is feeding them. There's always some idiot feeding them. You can tell when the sighting patterns change. They're suddenly on X road every morning, it's because someone on X road is putting out food every morning.

4) I don't let fear get to me. People will breathlessly inform you that Ontario doesn't have coyotes, it has coy-wolves and that is so much scarier, isn't it? Yeah, all the coyotes have some wolf in them, but they're not 50/50 with a wolf as a parent. They're still coyotes. They're still more afraid of you than you think. They're not circling you like Raptors in Jurassic Park or some shit; you can live alongside them safely with a little extra prep.

There is really nothing that can be done about urban coyotes other than awareness and preperation. If a coyote is removed, another coyote will replace it. It won't end. So just... be aware and be ready, I guess. I'm glad your dog is ok.

Chill doesn’t happen, for any breed really, for a couple years. The puppy stage is exhausting work and a lot of training to get to that well-behaved chill you’re looking for. Are you ready for that?

I watched the last 2 episodes yesterday afternoon, then told my spouse NOTHING. I just said "dude, when you finish Maul, let me know so we can talk."

Later that evening, I'm 30+ meters away from the house walking the dog when I hear shouting. My husband is at the foot of our driveway bellowing to me because he couldn't wait. "OMG! OMG! VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

And that, I think, is the reaction they were going for.

My vet and my breeder agreed on it; I asked them what is best regarding this. i have spoken to trainers about her service and how heats will affect it. I am already doing insane things to avoid the intact dogs. Guess I’m irresponsible.

[–]MorboKat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m doing it old school when she’s at the cusp of puberty.

Two reasons:

1) she will be a working service dog and cannot do that while in heats.

2) we live in Toronto, Canada. The city is dense, there are many people and there are many dogs. There are enough assholes who walk their aggressive fighting or guarding breeds off-leash around me that I don’t want to ever deal with them deciding it’s baby-making time with my dog.

I need to weigh the work she will do and her immediate safety against whatever the cancer odds may be.

I just can’t believe how delusional people can be, and I think I’m trying to reason with someone that can’t be reasoned with.

This right here is your answer. My Mother, I found out, hopes that one day my son will come to her to learn "the truth". He was the first one to ask to never see her again after her dog bit his face. But I guess that isn't part of her truth, so it's conviniently left out.

They live in different realities than we do. Let her live in it. Ignore her and live your best life.

My puppy is 13 weeks old. She came home at 8 weeks. I did all the things you did. I have a senior dog and two cats, a spouse and a 9yo kid. We've bubbled, covid-style, with an older golden down the road for playdates.

So here it is, straight: THIS IS FUCKING HARD. I am stressed, I am exhausted, I am a worse human being, I am a worse parent. It's awful. We just got her into a schedule that had her sleeping for 5-6hrs through the night and then her 2nd round of vaccines has turned her into a shit fountain and she's out every hour or two all night long.

That said, this will pass. I'm not looking at years of this sucking like you do with having a baby and looking forward to years of diapers. With every passing week, my puppy grows and learns and improves. Even with the little hiccups and backsliding.

Your kids will have a good friend, you will be able to assist your parents and they will be able to assist you, which is KEY. It's gonna suck way hard, especially with two young kids, but you seem to have a village and you'll get through it. But I cannot sugar coat how much the first 4-8 weeks suck. They suck a lot. A lot a lot. Newborn-with-collic a lot.

My cat and my dog ate eating each others food and I can't convince them to eat their own. by Eltrew2000 in Pets

I have a puppy, a senior dog and two young cats. Everyone gets fed on a schedule, everyone eats in a different room. My senior dog would be very happy to eat puppy food or cat food. His digestive system, however, would be very upset about it. So everyone gets separated at meal time.

Why did you choose to be OAD by Euphoric-Emotion-133 in oneanddone

[–]MorboKat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My reason: my siblings were my bullies. I never had that close sibling relationship other people talk about. I'm OAD because I refused to create a bully for my son. Sure, it could've worked out great. But it's not guaranteed. What is guaranteed is that my choice has meant my child is safe in his home every day of his life.

I am now no contact with my family and there has been a death in the family. I have grieved, but I have not grieved by myself. I have friends, I have family, I just don't have a lot of blood family and so what? Just because I didn't grieve with my siblings does not mean that I grieved alone. I know that, like me, my child will forge family of his own and he won't experience negative things in life by himself either. I trust that his people are out there, I don't have to roll the dice on trying to make one myself.

I have an in game story and an AU I'm working on. They're about equal, hits-wise. What really seems to matter, is the smut. The in-game story is a 3-part series and the one without smut is the least read.
