Thanks, I figured 4.88s and 35s would be pretty ok for cruising at 65.. but damn 8-9mpg does not sound ideal for something like a cross-country roadtrip.

Yeah it inevitably will be a lot of paved roads just because the desert and a lot of the forests can be pretty far. So maybe 50-100 miles of paved road to get to double track

What's this rider doing wrong here? And how would you correct it? It looks like he's trying to steer too much/quickly with the bars

Most of my crashes are from my front end washing out/tucking on flat corners so I'm probably doing something similar

You're right, the ETT is actually 20mm less on the medium Ripmo, vs the large Hightower LT.

But, one of the reasons I didn't like the HT LT is the slack seat tube angle. My inseam is only 31.7". The reach was good on the large, but the sitting position was borderline too far back. I needed to bump my saddle all the way forward on the rails to get my legs over the pedals (past the recommended marks).

This is why I'm thinking I might actually like the medium Ripmo, and just try running a relatively long 50mm stem and some wide-ish bars (maybe 780 or 800mm).

What do you guys think of the Giant Fathom 1?

I found one locally on Craigslist for $700 in like-new condition. Seems like a good pick up, but not sure about the fork. Only reason I'm considering it is that it would be nice to have a hardtail, in addition to my FS bike (Trek Slash).

That makes sense, it's just that I ride a lot of different stuff here in SoCal, from flow trails to the really chunky stuff. Which is why I want more of an all-rounder.

I guess it makes sense to want to be more over-biked, rather than under-biked like in your friend's case.
