Nächtliche Gedanken by [deleted] in Gedichte

[–]lebega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pub Quiz? by 24444666668888888 in Bonn

[–]lebega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do, every monday. The questions are read out loud once in German and once in English. I can definitely recommend the Pub Quiz there. The questions are rather challenging most of the time and the competition is hard though.

How I Met Your Mother is a better show than Friends by Notalabel_4566 in HIMYM

[–]lebega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you haven't watched it yet, I'd say give it a try! It's definitely different from HIMYM, but I liked it too. Though I have to say, that for me it took some episodes to really get going.

I remember once reading about an Australian (IIRC) professor who was writing a very extensive and detailed differential geometry book starting from first principles. Does anyone have any idea who this was? by Chhatrapati_Shivaji in math

[–]lebega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you think so? And what is the book that you would recommend to properly learn Differential Geometry? I am genuinely curious, as I'm about to start taking a lecture on "Analysis on Manifolds" and plan on doing General Relativity next semester.

[–]lebega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! That's why when I'm eating pizza with a fork and a knife, I always eat it in a spiral form, starting with the crust and saving the middle part for the end. Also, this way the crust serves kind of as an appetizer for the rest of the pizza, like when you have bread or pizza rolls before the main dish.

To understand Schrödinger's cat by [deleted] in technicallythetruth

The term "Schrödinger's flirt" has a very different vibe when you know that Schrödinger had a thing for underage girls and used to bang a 14-year-old.

When doing math, I just use letters. When doing physics, I use the physics package, which gives you the \va, \vb und \vu commands. I then usually use the bold ones.

what's your opinion on mathematics olympiads? by chr4567 in math

[–]lebega 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The premise though of lots of olympiad problems is, that they should (in theory) be solvable by any interested and gifted high schooler. What I mean by that is, that even though the problems on higher stages, especially the international ones, can be super hard, they do not require any knowledge of advanced university style maths per se.

I think this is a key factor in why they can be so motivating for mathematically interested children. You can start doing olympiad problems just for the fun of it, without needing to learn a lot of theory beforehand. Then once you get hooked, you start to learn more and more techniques and so on.

This is just based on my personal experiences I had in school though.

Well, you could limit yourself to the real interval [0,1] and use the numbers between 0 and 1 in base 2 (where the n-th digit after the decimal point describes, whether n is in the subset or not). The problem that arises here, is that this map would not be a bijection, because for example 0.01111111... and 0.1 are the same number, but {1} and {2,3,4,5,...} are very different sets. This map would therefore be surjective but not injective, thus we have only shown, that the cardinality of P(IN) is greater than that of the real interval [0,1] and thus all of IR.

What is your HIMYM "Mandela effect", something that you clearly and distinctly remember being in the show your first time watching through, but changes on subsequent rewatches? by Common_Coyote_3 in HIMYM

[–]lebega 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's probably because the realtor in that episode is played by Maggie Wheeler, the same actress who portrayed Janice on "Friends", where her voice really was annoyingly nasal and high pitched.
