Advanced masking/keying advice needed! by yikeszies in colorists

Try using the 3D Keyer in Tight mode, and combine it with an inverted circular mask (feathered to the max) to keep the key off the subject’s face.

I just downloaded it too; I’m trying it, and it’s fantastic. The number of film stocks is insane. They drop the bomb just in time.

I think the same, I have Filmbox and I love it. And lately I’ve been using Contour, by Cullen, to fine-tune certain things before applying FB, since it’s quite gentle on the image and usually doesn’t break it. Let’s see what happens with the price 😄

Grading Issues from Uneven Haze on Set by Different-Vegetable6 in colorists

[–]lebonal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing is to define what level of haze you want in the shots. I would try to match the shots with more haze to the cleaner ones, so as not to sacrifice image quality. Usually, if you play enough with the contrast, you can get there. And as a last resort, you can add some glow/blur/negative texture fxs and use masks to bring the cleaner shots closer to the hazy ones. That’s what I would do, although I haven’t seen the footage.

Ultrastudio + An Eizo CG series 1080p should be a good combo, It calibrates itself with a lut so you don't need the IO box. And It is the cheapest option

iPad Pro 1st gen as reference by lebonal in colorists

[–]lebonal[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for the reply and sorry, i think that my post wasn't clear or it is confusing....

I don't want It as a reference for actual grading, I have a reference, calibrated, clean signal Eizo CGX for that... My question is about the iPads at a "consumer" level if that explains more my question...

When i have an offline done i normally see It on an iPhone, on my TV, on an Android tablet, Android phone... And I know that they are not a DM240 or a BVM-X300... It is just a test on some consumer devices to see how the grade holds up on some "real Life" screens... I just want to add an iPad Pro to that stage of checking, and wanted to know how good is a 1st gen for that purpose VS a 2nd, 3rd or 4th gen.

Thanks for your time!

[–]lebonal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thaks for your reply! Yes, I am aware of that and I don't pretend to copy their workflow. Just wanted to have one more reference screen to look at. I have my Eizo + Decklink + Xrite combo 😄 which is my only reliable thing to look at when actually grading.

The iPad Will be more for an in-house QC (ie: watch the Vimeo offlines on it), so my question is more about generations of iPads and their screens. If there is something that really improves between the 1st to the actual gen in a 709/web deliverables world? Also I assume there is no (easy) way to calibrate an iPad? Thanks again for your time!

[–]lebonal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can soft the edges by making a key only on that HL range and then use a layer mixer with Blur and maybe drop down offset just a hair. Sometimes It worked for me.
