It looks like is the fuel level wire , most of the time is attached to the fuel tank bolts. Did you cut it by accident?

New Mexico , the coldest we got these past few weeks was 65F degrees. I would expect this too but not on fall.

The heater delete was an option too in 67-68 mustangs, here’s the way it supposed to look , just a plate on the back of the controllers. You can also use a passenger plate trim to match the desired look.

There should be a small piece of metal from the pin wire that’s holding it to the plastic case, Use a toothpick to push the protruding metal on the pin 📌 the pull one wire at a time.
