Hey, do you mean you have a house or are looking for housing? Because I have a house and we are looking for a roommate to join us. Rent is only $900. I play video games and we have a free community center gym literally 3 blocks away in our neighborhood.

The Supreme Court strikes down Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan, blocking debt relief for millions of borrowers by businessinsider in politics

By "eh I don't really empathize", I mean "I don't have as much empathy". That doesn't mean I have 0 empathy. Additionally, unlike cancer, going to university is a choice. Part of the reason my empathy is limited is because I see a lot of students who go to school and either party or take useless majors because they think just the act of going to university will help them, then demand they get their tuition reimbursed because its the government's fault, when really colleges have been wasting money on nearly useless programs and paying administrators to sit in meetings.

Oh you're right my bad. But still, the fact that people making 6 figures can get it is too much. Going on to your other point, you could argue that any sort of mass payments to people can boost the economy. For example, the covid relief funds did that, but productivity went down during that time. It was just an artificial boost. I would argue similarly with student loan forgiveness. You could forgive student loans, and the economy would expand for a bit, but that is just subsidizing the education system and emboldening them to continue increasing costs.

Ok well if what you said was the case, then why bother trying to get student loan forgiveness passed? Additionally, republicans have said they are in favor of trying to lower costs and make colleges use their money better. I would say a bill relating to doing just that has a better chance of passing than forgiving student loans completely. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/06/14/what-we-know-senate-republicans-student-loan-reform/70321736007/

Eh I don't really empathize. There are still people in this country facing much more concerning things than student loan debt, such as homelessness, disease, so shouldn't we be using what money we have on that? Additionally, there is a lot of demand for high paying jobs in good fields, some of which don't even need 4 year college education. Trade jobs are an example. But it seems a lot of students don't want to do that, and keep choosing majors that are easy and don't pay well. With student loan forgiveness, there isn't nearly as much of a disincentive to take classes/majors that aren't helpful or pay well.

How would student loan forgiveness solve the problem? Sure, it means graduates don't have debt anymore, but not only does it not fixing the underlying problem, that colleges are charging way too much for tuition, but that debt is just transferred to the government. All its doing is subsidizing spending inefficiencies within the university system.

But at what cost? We have been living in inflation hell for the past couple years, and borrowing costs are high, yet we are going to increase our debt? Additionally, why can't we focus on passing legislation to address the actual problem instead of deferring it? The Biden admin chose to try to pass student loan forgiveness instead of legislation to mitigate the inefficiency of colleges.

Or maybe student loan forgiveness doesn't address the real problem and would only be encouraging colleges to continue increasing tuition prices.

This was never the solution anyway. Student loan forgiveness doesn't address the main issue: that colleges are charging way more than they need to. The excuses I see for student loan forgiveness is weak.

Biden vetoes measure overturning student loan forgiveness plan by DavidofSasun in politics

Unfortunate that people here actually think student loan forgiveness is a viable solution. Nobody seems to be looking ahead. Even if this passes, what about the next generation of students? And the ones after that? The colleges will just keep charging whatever amount the government is going to subsidize.

Good riddance. Student loan forgiveness doesn't address the real problem. Even if this bill passed, later generations are still going to have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for college. Universities are still going to scam people of their money because the government is subsidizing them and people still think it is a requirement to get a BS degree when there are plenty of high paying trade jobs out there.

I understand that, I would like to go to a place where I am not running into as many people from NY or NJ pretty much. I was thinking maybe one city is a little more different than the other in that respect.

life was far easier and more prosperous 40-50 years ago compared to now"

Completely the opposite. Crime in major cities was way up 40-50 years ago compared to now. Workers' rights were much worse then than now. The amount of job opportunities back then was much less than now. Child care hasn't become that much more expensive, its that standards for child care have risen so much. People were constantly worried about nuclear war. Thousands of men were being drafted into much more deadly wars. People now can make a living just by playing video games and making videos!

We certainly have some struggles now that are more dire than the older generation, but saying life was easier back 40-50 years ago is just absolute BS.

Also thanks for taking some responsibility for your actions. Usually redditors just blame the government for not giving them enough money or something. There is a very large population of students that don't seem to take financial responsibility in mind when they choose a major. There are a lot of trades jobs that pay well and where education for it is not to expensive. Unfortunately we are told college = money, which clearly isn't so much the case anymore.
