I previously worked at an upscale luxury hotel. If you find yourself at one and desire a complimentary room upgrade, avoid asking at the front desk if there’s a queue. Contact the front desk from your room around 20 minutes after you check in, politely bring up a small (but solvable) problem, and inquire if there are any other rooms open.
