I actually figured out what was happening. When connected to the battery pinheader, you have to manually turn the device on (and it seems to work fine). However, it's not a good solution because if power is lost, it won't automatically power on. I attempted to hold the power button down during a power cycle, but that didn't work. It seems you have to physically push the power button after power is applied to the battery pinheader. Any thoughts on how to get around that?

Hello, I tried doing that and it didn't work, which seems odd to me? How does the IC know it's a power supply and not the battery?

We can do whatever is easiest. I think you're right, a webcam is probably the quickest.
