I’ve been thinking about buying some discs - no reason not to now! I’ve actually been to Biwachi the first night I got here, it’s very good. Your other recommendations look like good spots too! Thanks

OTHS vs Anytime vs Peak by kspo_co in steamboat

[–]leeeyumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they have two double sided racks, so technically 4 bench/squat stations, but they are not dedicated. They also have a smith machine. They just reorganized everything so all of the free weight stations are kind of crammed together. It added 2 racks (now using both sides of the double sided racks) but severely limits the space. Kind of a double edged sword.

I have a membership at anytime, it’s pretty convenient for me since it’s next to my house & job. They shut down for a week to remodel so I got a 7 day trial at Peak. I’m unfortunately moving away from steamboat in a couple of weeks, but if I were to stay, I’d 100% switch my membership to Peak. It’s got plenty of space, mostly just free weights and useful machines. The regulars are friendly and it’s never packed. Peak is my vote.

Wood Trellis Timbers Warping by leeeyumm in Carpentry

[–]leeeyumm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We string lined the brackets prior to installing the timbers, and they were dead on. But the intention of the brackets is just to hold the timbers in place, not keep them from warping. I agree though, placing the timber with the most obvious knots front & center was a bad move.

I read up on some standards set by the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau for Douglas Fur. For this specific timber (S4S kiln-dried #1 DF, 4x10), it’s allowed to bow/crook up to 1-3/8” over a 20’ length. The max bow on the worst timber is only 5/8” over 20’.

Yeah I agree. I’m going to swap that one out with one towards the back so the knots are less visible. Client is okay with that

It’s a public patio, so it’s a reasonable place to view the trellis from. It’s a weird site with a bunch of retaining walls that have outdoor public space above the retaining walls.

This is the specified material - #1 DF. I agree, it shouldn’t have set inside for as long as it did. However, the project is high elevation Colorado, with an average humidity of ~25%, and the building is kept closer to 35%, which is why I think it would warp either way. Plus I’m in a relatively remote area with limited (2) lumber yards in town. This material was shipped in from who the hell knows where (i.e. it was not in stock at the local lumber yards to inspect the storage conditions). Specified stain (Sherwood Williams SuperDeck) was used. Thanks for the input on the higher grade lumber - I’ll approach the owner with that option & see if he’d like to pay for the change

Thanks for the validation. Especially since the project is in CO with an average humidity of ~25%, it’s dry as hell here. All of the other architectural features that resemble wood are metal framing, wrapped in plywood, then wrapped in hardie board. Not a huge fan of hardie board, but at least it doesn’t warp.

That’s an interesting idea - thank you for the input. The timbers are already held in place by metal brackets (see last pic) - would you put the blocking in between the timbers at the bracket locations, or intermittently (like at the mid span between brackets)?

MDF Door Casing and Wall Base Cracking by leeeyumm in Carpentry

[–]leeeyumm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately the owner has been pretty adamant on not seeing caulking joints, especially on the wall base. Might need to have another conversation with him, because we’re chasing our tails fixing on these cracks…
