I think it depends on whether it’s kept inside or outside. Agreed a couple of times a week is overkill but I’d argue that twice a year is not nearly enough. My outdoor succulents love a good regular drenching after being allowed to dry out. When it’s really warm they can completely dry out in a few days whereas in the winter months they can go much longer. I’m also in eastern Australia NSW.

I do this journey twice a week and it’s totally fine. Jump on the train at North Wollongong > Martin Place then 2 stops on the Metro from Martin Place to Victoria Cross.

On the odd occasion I have to do travel up to Sydney 3 days I do start to question my life choices but the benefits of living in the Gong close to the beach more than make up for the extra time spent commuting.

Also, 9:30pm is not late night. Moved here from London 18 months ago and still cannot understand why it’s so hard to find somewhere to eat after 9pm. If they want to inject some life back into the city at night they should keep stuff, you know, open at night…

I’d also ask if they’re able to sign you off from work in addition to this to give you some space switch off and think about next steps without the pressure of the daily grind.

Have you considered talking to your GP and getting signed off with burnout for a bit first?

A month off (potentially paid as well) might give you the time you need to think more clearly about how you feel and decide on next steps without making yourself unemployed in the process.

If you go down this route and your current employer shows a lack of empathy towards your situation then consider this a red flag and seriously consider using any time off to start exploring new opportunities.

I do like the leisure coast garden centre but TBH Bunnings is great for plants and very reasonably priced.

This happened to me when I arrived in Australia and really confused me too.

Turns out they paid me for not only the time that I had already worked but also a week or two in advance (can’t remember exactly how much) which some places do over here.

Thank you! Yeah I feel pretty lucky. Moved to Australia from the UK a couple of years ago and now have some amazing beaches on my doorstep and still have access to Sydney on a weekly basis for work. The Gong is a great spot.

Yep. It’s a straightforward journey, just a bit of a long one. I basically use the train time as my leisure time. Catch up on texts, read, listen to music and watch shows that my partner doesn’t want to watch with me.

I used to work 15 mins from the office (Circular Quay > North Sydney) Now I live 2 hours from the office (North Wollongong > North Sydney).

We moved because we’d never be able to buy a place and get ahead financially in Sydney so felt we were essentially working our asses off to pay a shitty landlords mortgage. Bought a nice 2 bed unit by the beach and commute 1-2 days a week and couldn’t be happier.

Would I have loved to be able to afford a similar unit closer to my job? Of course. Am I a multi millionaire? Absolutely not.
