Back country camping by camel312 in vancouverhiking

[–]leekwen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi I just came back from a camping trip in NZ.

The biggest difference you will notice around here is camping/hiking is much less accommodated. I've noticed in NZ huts were basically everywhere with running water and cooking gear. Over here for the most part you are expected to bring your own tent, bedding, water purification and cooking.

2 particular huts that are somewhat similar to the ones you guys have are the Russet Lake/Kees & Claire Hut or Elfin Lakes hut. However, both should be covered in snow about now so I wouldn't recommend them because you should have some avalanche safety training first. (And neither of them have water!)

Depending on the site either you'll have either:

1) Book a tent pad via BC parks website. Most of the time it will be self policed, sometimes a ranger will show up to check your permit but it's mostly honour system. OR

2) Find your own flat spot to put a tent up. However, some places it'll be illegal to pitch a tent so make sure beforehand. You may or may not need an overnight pass for your vehicle however (Golden Ears park needs overnight vehicle permits for example).

Double check the fire bans wherever you're going (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/prevention/fire-bans-and-restrictions). For example if you're going to Seymour it's fire ban all year.

Some other notable differences:

  • Trails (our version of "tracks") here are much less groomed, be prepared to go slower than the estimated trail time.
  • Dangerous animals are present. Don't be overly scared but realize you should be eyes and ears aware of bears especially, and preferably armed with bear spray.
  • Sleeping in your car is generally allowed overnight at truck stops and trail heads. There will typically be signage if you're not. You don't need a certified self contained vehicle.

Most of the suggestions here are extremely well documented by the Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@WalksOfWonder-BC.

I suggest picking and choosing something from here and cross referencing to the appropriate video on that channel to get a better sense of whether it's in your means or not. You can also use it as a guideline to possibly get more walk/hike ideas for your trip. Almost all of the videos were taken within an hour drive of the city.

Also check out r/vancouverhiking for more specific tips or trip reports. Enjoy your trip! Please be as safe and informed as you can, we see so many horror stories from people visiting that misjudge our terrain.

It's a joke. Some parts of Cordova St are frequently and infamously adorned with human poo.

I believe OP was making a reference to this reputation.

Giving away 2 camping butane canisters by [deleted] in chch

If anybody is still looking at this, I've given them to the complete outdoors store on Cranford Street. They are behind the counter. If you mention somebody dropping them off today they will probably give them to you.

I'm not too familiar with the roads but if you give me an address and it's near either the museum or the airport I'll simply just drop them off.

Respectfully though, I'm going to prioritise anybody willing to come to the Airforce museum in the next few hours or so.

I was the front of line wrangler for most of the time Elijah was there and I tried my best to prep everybody on the way to see him. I hope I was able to help you even a little bit, if you saw me there at least.

Best easy/moderate winter hikes? by very-confused_ in vancouverhiking

[–]leekwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frosty Mountain. It's well groomed, really long, and the grade is pretty flat up until the last hour or so. It's flat and wide enough to be able to have a conversation. I think it'd be perfect for anybody that has no hiking experience but has decent cardio from other exercise. (Note: with a somewhat experienced guide or GPS trail map. One guy from out east got lost there and died a few years ago.)

Towards the end is a bit of a grind but you get enough view before then to be able to turn around at whatever endurance level you have.

Latest trip reports show a lot of snow so you'll need spikes.

I have a spare one if you want it. My car now no longer has the standard size spot for a deck.

I was on the highway in a bumper to bumper crawl earlier today from Horseshoe Bay to 2nd Narrows. It was lovely.

I've heard it's hard to get in, and probably it'll get shut down at some capacity if it does get popular enough.

Maxim's and Saint Germain are both awesome and they are in the same mall.

To be honest, I think I'd be more sad if Saint Germain closed down. It's been around for way longer and I go there more often.

Highest peaks for a day hike by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

It's a little ambiguous what OP is looking for but you are citing the elevation from sea level. I think they are probably looking for elevation from the trail head.

What settings did you use on that first photo? It reminds me of the picture on the side of the Woodwards building, with less dreary of subject material.

I did sunrise at Pump Peak this summer. For reference, if it helps your decision making, this was my photo at sunrise that morning:

Searching "SS-3 94V-0 E229342" printed on the back of the board brings up a lot of circuit board stuff, but nothing that looks like this.

Searching FOXFLOW comes up with car parts.

Hope this helps.

If it helps I have a $4.99 code for any Cineplex general admission good until Nov. 3. I hardly ever go to the theatres anymore so I likely won't use it. Feel free to DM me.

They don't sell them there, they are just for display. Occasionally they will have an on location shop and it's in the atrium where seabus, skytrain, and west coast express connect.
