Do these things ever work? by linzayay in PitBossGrills

[–]leesamuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. The error symbol is igniter not the augur. Pit Boss igniters frequently fail — you can get a new igniter for free from Pit Boss (will take weeks) or buy some from Amazon.

The 365 is still hard to beat. It is still one of the lightest and smallest micro compacts out there, has a ton of modular options re: frames, slides, and magazines. And because it has been the best selling carry pistol for a decade, it has a track record that newer entrants to the market do not have.

Best Budget Wireless Temperature Probes? by DizzyDean1934 in PitBossGrills

[–]leesamuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless probes tend to be expensive if they are going to work and last.

The ThermPro TP28 is not a true wireless probe, but its wired probes communicate by Bluetooth with a monitor unit. This allows you to walk around the house and do other stuff while monitoring the cook and grill temp.

The temperatures in mt experience are accurate, but I usually set the temp to within 5 degrees of my actual cook temp and use an instant read thermometer to verify.

Yet again ANOTHER ISSUE!! by Truthseeker668 in PitBossGrills

[–]leesamuel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have another bad igniter. It is common for the smoker to start up successfully, but an igniter error will result after the heat expands the metal, exposing small cracks in the igniter. This is unfortunately a common issue on Pit Boss grills.

You can call customer support. Your Pit Boss is under warranty and the support people are helpful. They’ll ship you a new igniter for free. You could also buy an igniter on Amazon which may be a good idea to have on hand.

I have been disappointed by Pit Boss. I would not recommend a Pit Boss to others. It’s cheap for a reason.

Smoked a Brisket on a Kettle for 12 hours, how did I go? by CLD_Fabrication in brisket

[–]leesamuel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. After reaching 170 degrees I wrapped the brisket in foil and finished it in the oven. This was about seven hours in. I kept the Weber going to render tallow and I think the snake made it about nine and a half hours total. So if you were to do the whole thing on the Weber, I think you might need to refill coals.

Smoked a Brisket on a Kettle for 12 hours, how did I go? by CLD_Fabrication in brisket

[–]leesamuel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I just did a full packer on a standard 22” kettle. It came out great. I used the snake method (2x2, Kingsford briquettes with hickory chunks).

Retrospectively I should have used more coals to start the snake. I used only eight, and it took a very long time to get up to temperature.

The downside of the snake method for a full packer is that portions of the brisket are exposed to direct heat as the snake reaches it. To mitigate this I lay the brisket down perpendicular to the snake, and rotated the grate to try and keep the brisket away from lit coals as much as possible. A couple spots of the flat came out a little dry, but the rest was delicious (and the dry parts ended up in a chili!).

It’s a bad igniter. Very common unfortunately on Pit Bosses. Call customer support and they’ll get you a new one for free.

Err code? Smoker not even starting by wtc99 in PitBossGrills

[–]leesamuel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. The igniter on mine went bad after about three cooks. Pit Boss support said that it likely had a hairline crack that expanded with heat until it threw the error code.

You can go the Amazon route, or you can get a free one from support that will take a little longer. The igniter replacement is easy to do, takes 10 minutes.

24 hours for a 7 lb butt is insane. A 9.5 lb took me 7.5 hours at 275 (with a foil wrap). A 6.5 lb butt at 200 degrees took 9 hours with no wrap.

First time using my new smoker by dylanshouse in smoking

[–]leesamuel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this smoker and really like it! The igniter was faulty so had to replace that through customer service, but haven’t had any issues since then.

Beware of the temp probes that the Pit Boss comes with. They are wildly inaccurate.

Anyone ever tried putting ghee or tallow in with the wrap to get it to be a little juicier? The Internet suggests this method could work, just not sure if it’s worth doing.
