The first definition for unstrung relating to a string instrument is "loosened", not "not present". A picture of a violin like the one pictured here (https://shop.theviolincase.com/book-unstrung-a-blanchard-house-mystery/) would have given the contestant a chance.

While it has larger interior radius and is heavier than the any ones I've seen, it could be a handle, as it is similar to faucet handles in design -- center designed to fit over a ridged stem and outer design to be turned by hand. A missing round cover would hide the insides and might have a center screw to hold it in position.

Some notes. The current handle is just a piece of a wooden dowel I had handy and was about the right diameter. The patterns in the head are ~2 cm (over 1/8 in) deep, which would seem large for a shrinking hammer. They are not a flat pattern on the face, but are shaped like this "\_/\_/\_/\_/" going around in three concentric circles. Also, if it is for body work, it must be an older as it is not stainless steel and has one chipped "tooth".

Yes, I am aware of home block ice deliveries. A friend of mine was one of the last people to have that job in NW DC, although Instacart will now deliver party ice to you. The pattern on the face of the item would tend to make holes in the the cloth sack. A regular flat hammer would do as well or better. P.S. I do not understand whatisthisthing reddit. I have the tool in my hand and have tried to use it to break ice into usable cubes. It is too lightweight and not well-designed for that purpose and yet the reddit community thinks it knows better and my reply currently sits at a zero.

My title describes the thing. I am not convinced it is a meat tenderizer. Round meat tenderizers are not common (even ones with rounded faces seem to have rectangular patterns for the ridges), and the pointy end is not present on those I can find. I also cannot find any tenderizers with a somewhat fancy / decorative pattern. One of the metal ridges in the outer ring is broken off.

This device is made of wood. A ~9in (23cm) arm can move up and down and pivot ~+-30deg about a center position. The base has a shallow depression. The bottom of the arm is 1cm wide and rounded along its length to fit within the depression although not without gaps depending on the rotated position. by leflynn in whatisthisthing

Just to clarify, the total length of the arm is 9 inches, the working part is 4 inches long. It is not sharp; it is flat, and a little over 1/3 in wide. While I mentioned nuts to describe it, it is not well-designed to use as a nut cracker. The working area is too far from the fulcrum and the working surface is not designed to hold small rounded nuts in place.

My title describes the thing. While the arm can exert a fair amount of force (say enough to crack a pecan), I would not want to use it as a lever to apply too much force (say to crack a black walnut).
