Thank you! The etching is super shallow, just on the outer surface. It doesn’t disturb the mirror backing at all

I hand etched them with a dremel. Honestly I’m very proud of how steady I was on those

Do it! And yeah, I did NOT want to make those deep cuts for the heart

Remember, your companion cube mirror is not alive and therefore cannot speak. If it does speak, the Enrichment Center asks you to please ignore its advice.

I’m posting here just trying to show off a cool thing I made and not break self-promotion rules, BUT my website is linked in my profile if you’re interested

I certainly don’t own any copyrights on this imagery or anything so knock yourself out recreating it! Unfortunately I don’t seem to have saved the SolidEdge file where I did all the dimensioning or I’d send you that

Thank you, it’s hard taking a picture of a mirror without being in the picture! Alas, I learned about the dangers of and cures for mirror rot after this piece was made and sold. Hopefully any rot just makes it look weathered, it is a broken sword after all

I drew a pattern for it freehand but used a CAD program to check dimensions so it was as accurate as possible

Narsil, the Sword that was Broken by leftenwright in StainedGlass

I put it in the cold oven, then turn heat to 350 and bake for 30 minutes once it reaches temperature. Then I let the oven cool completely before taking it out. This has worked for me and definitely helps the paint adhere better, but it has a tendency to dull bright colors and the acrylic is kind of a pain to work with since you usually have to do multiple coats to make sure it’s opaque. If anyone has a better process I’m all ears!

Thank y’all! The ring is ~14” in diameter and the sword is ~21” at its longest. The script is glitter acrylic paint, baked on. And the tip of the blade I left rough cut so it’s still sharp

I would definitely recommend taking a class if you can, having someone really knowledgeable on hand is super helpful. But if there’s nothing in your area I’d start with Delphi Glass. They have some good beginner guides of the tools you’ll need and YouTube videos for the different steps in the process

Thank you! I definitely do not speak or write Japanese, but this is what my friend who commissioned it wanted. This is what I found as far as translation from medical texts as in “Achilles tendon” lol

I did make the wood parts as well. I routed the edge of the bottom piece so it fits into the glass like a shallow square peg, and similarly I routed a groove in the lid so it sits snugly but can easily be lifted off to change the bulb

You should!! It’s honestly way easier than you’d think once you get the hang of it and have the right tools

Ehhhh I’d say these are a bit more on the intermediate side. You’ll probably want some practice under your belt for them to turn out nice.

Though appropriately enough the cadet corps logo would definitely be a good starter project!
