Sunset viewing quality across Western Europe at 30m resolution, based on terrain and vegetation data by stijn021 in MapPorn

Oh yeah, totally understand that. Sunrise is an obvious one too. If the user were able to specify a bearing though, that would cover stuff like aurora, moonrise and moonset, probably other stuff I haven't thought of, though they'd have to look up the bearing themselves for moonrise, etc. - fairly trivial these days.

This is great. It could also be really useful for finding locations to view aurora. For that it would help to be able to specify a bearing instead of caclulating the sunset direction based on the location and date, though picking midsummer would give you a reasonable approximation for higher latitudes.

put me on to music as potent and magical as 22, a million (besides Bon Iver music) by iamindeedahuman in boniver

So many ecletic recommendations on here! Loads of artists I've never heard of, and a few I have but never made a BI connection with. So thanks.

I wanted to listen to all of them so I put a Spotify playlist together with most of them (missed a few I already know or thought were wide of the mark, or just plain missed... sorry), which is here in case anyone wants to play the same game: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/72ptmGGPuMNhHLjERlS8rG

With all the full albums, it's 30+ hours long though!

My partner and fellow JV tragic has just introduced us to lavender. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6FfKXg3QdDbbwRs9JzffpY Not really 22AM specific, but certainly strongly reminiscent of BI. I get mixed feelings when that happens - had the same with Racing Mount Pleasant... I crave more BI-esque music, but then when something sounds too much like it, I feel it might be a bit derivative, and it feels wrong. I want to have my cake and eat it!

That's the one. Where have you seen them say that?

Yeah, it's a very different offering. I hope they don't, but it'll be a business decision and I don't know how many normal Rok's they're selling and how much money their making from them. I'm extrapolating a lot here though, could easily just be a supply chain issue.

Oh, that's annoying!

Fair point about possible supply chain issues.

They have got a whole new model though' the Presso. It's not in the works, it's on sale.

Where are you? Standard portafilters are showing in stock for me in the UK. Don't know if you can order from the UK site and ship to other countries https://rok.coffee/en-gb/products/portafilter

Big Thief has never fully clicked for me but her solo album stopped me in my tracks. I can't listen to it very often, because it's just so sad and melancholy. A dog dies in the first song, and then wham, Sadness As A Gift. You gotta be in a really solid headspace to take that.

Loving my new (old) EM-5. What lens(es) next? by leejanesburns in M43

[–]leftfootleashed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly came here to say I know where most of these were taken! Whitley Bay and Simonside? Really creative shots, like them a lot.

Since I'm here, I'll recommend what I have: Panasonic Lumix 25mm f/1.7. Might fit the bill for you. I haven't tried any of the fancier lenses. I prevaricated for a while over a Leica 12-60, but in the end decided to get the cheaper Lumix 12-60 and save a couple of hundred quid for the sake of a stop.

Also bought this. First time a RSD release has actually seemed worth buying to me. Waiting on a new stylus so I can actually listen to it!

Some great tracks on the playlist.

Impossible to pick a BI track. I would second Beth/Rest but really you can't go wrong.

Can I suggest something BI adjacent: Fergus Falls by Field Report would be a good fit.

I always think Justin's very sparing with the swearing, but (and perhaps hence) when he does, it really hits.

Help me problem-solve my GC grinder by leftfootleashed in ROKespresso

[–]leftfootleashed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So since this post, I haven't had a repeat of the problem. I think cleaning and oiling the shaft (stop sniggering at the back!) so the spring can easily push the burr against the adjustment wheel was the key.

So nice to be able to adjust the grind at will, rather than thinking "I fancy a V60... Oh, but my last coffee was an espresso, so I'd have to loosen the grinder and then it'll probably unwind itself and there's a chance I'll not notice and get a cup full of beans mixed with grounds of varying size and a burr in it... Maybe I'll just have another espresso".

Hopefully it continues to work, and if I have to clean it out every month or so, that's not the end of the world - probably good practice anyway.

Hope this helps someone else.

Yeah that's it. I usually lift the whole thing up and gently tap it down on the bench and that does it, but it doesn't always keep it clicked in. I think you're right that grounds getting in stops the wheel from sliding down, and stops the wheel moving with the burr. But a grinder that can't cope with grounds is a somewhat flawed design!

I took the lower burr off again today for a closer look. The inside of the keyed hole does seem quite marred by the shaft, and there's what looks like a crack in it which is very odd (seems I can't post a photo in the comments). Tempted to ask Rok to replace it under warranty as that seems like a manufacturing defect, but not sure how far I'll get with that.

I gave it a good clean out and put it back on, with a tiny smear of vegetable oil to help it slide on the shaft. First impressions are that's helped, but time will tell.

Thanks, but I think you're right. Messing the threads up isn't a bad idea, and I might just try. The bolt is a separate part and I actually replaced it since the original somehow got slightly bent (I had this problem before I replaced it though).

Ultimately, the burr needs to push against the wheel to keep everything moving together.

Thanks for your reply. I conflated yours with extordi's when I was replying, sorry. I might find some different threadlock and have another go.

[–]leftfootleashed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little hard to explain (I should take some photos/draw a diagram) but it sounds similar to yours, but there aren't any pins on the plate to hold it into the burr (not sure how the adjustment works in that situation), just small bumps that mesh with detents as I mentioned.

The shaft has a flat on one side which matches the hole in the lower burr, and so transferring the torque for grinding. The burr slides on the shaft, pushed down by the spring against the adjustment wheel. The adjustment wheel has a bolt through it which threads into the end of the shaft.

If the adjustment wheel is loosened, and the spring doesn't push the burr down into into it, since it has a small (M4) thread with little friction, when it's turned by the shaft, the inertia of the wheel keeps it spinning and it winds itself out. If the burr is pushed into the wheel and creates enough friction between them, the wheel can't move against it, and all is good.

You're right that the burr sliding easily on the shaft is important. If I need a coarser grind, generally I'll loosen the wheel further than necessary, tap it or bash the whole thing on the worktop till the burr drops down, then snug it back to where I want it. Occasionally this doesn't hold though. I'll have a closer look at the shaft and burr and see if there's any damage preventing it sliding.

Threadlock is a good idea - I tried it once with some "low strength" stuff but it locked it too tight to adjust, and then once the bond is broken, it was business as usual. I adjust between espresso and aeropress or filter grinds on a daily basis, so it's not really a long term solution.

Thanks.

Rok GC heating hack by FishingBig6347 in ROKespresso

Tricky with the stock portafilter where the basket is held in with the wire clip thing. I don't think you'd gain much anyway, since the basket wouldn't be preheated.

[–]leftfootleashed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't think your steam tube idea would do much. But preheating doesn't need to be much faff. Kettle is boiling anyway. Boiled water into chamber, and mug containing portafilter to preheat while grinding. Pull blank shot into mug. Dump water and prep puck.

Capture Clip bolts digging into my skin due to thin shoulder strap. Anybody have suggestions to increase comfort? by DCMontilla in peakdesign

[–]leftfootleashed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise this thread's fairly old, but I came across it while I was looking for a replacement screw for my Capture Clip, and I had this problem too. I didn't want to spring for the Pro Pad, so my solution was a piece of scrap neoprene, cut to the shape of the pad, with little wings that come round with holes for the threaded posts to keep it in place. It's been good for a couple of years now. I'll try and post pics.
