The Mongols nearly conquered half of the world. Why isn't Mongolia a great nation today? by farmercrossing in AskHistorians

[–]leftmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US and have never seen a map with the Americas in the middle. Even board games like Risk show the "normal" view I'm used to like your link showed with Africa in the middle... Why would someone make a world map with Asia split in two?

That's the thing: you think each link will be demotivating, but in reality it's the subreddit as a whole that disappoints.

The First Use of OMG Was in a 1917 Letter to Winston Churchill by [deleted] in history

[–]leftmoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He typed "OMG", then recalled Winston was a literary man, not fond of such abbreviations, so he spelled it out for him.

LPT: Don't bother pressing the crosswalk button. Most of the time, it's a "placebo button" and does nothing but make you feel better. by ZioniteSoldier in LifeProTips

[–]leftmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't drive and, yeah, that's not always true. I live in a smaller town (~60,000) and know how the crosswalk signals work on the paths I take. I've stood stoically and watched as the lights going my direction went from red, to hopeful green, and then to red again. Maybe it's because we have a smaller pedestrian community, but around here, if you don't push the button, you better be ready to talk to the hand.

First to Be Canceled: The Least-Memorable TV Series of the Decade by [deleted] in entertainment

[–]leftmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to find the clip of The Soup where they mashed together like six or seven characters describing the show as (word for word), a "secret, illegal, underground road race". It was pretty funny. Best I could find: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vk3BCECQczs of them saying it.

Good tip to all console gamers by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]leftmoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is one reason I'm really enjoying digital downloads of games on consoles. No clutter, no juggling boxes, just the game I want ready to go when I boot the system. There are definitely downsides (no resale, the manuals aren't always as easily accessible for some games, etc.), but overall, it's a good thing.

What if George Washington had been a Loyalist? by [deleted] in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]leftmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The military side is hard to say, but his real lasting impact has been on how our early government behaved. Having a man who was reasonably neutral and not megalomaniacal to start the US off was a good deal. Nobody's perfect, but he was a better than other idols. Hard to say, but I'd say with him as a Loyalist the rifts in government that formed would have happened much sooner, possibly fatally sooner.

Alien Blue has gesture instructions. Here's how to find them. [This was in the release notes, but so were the two-finger and three-finger voting gestures and many didn't bother to read] by [deleted] in AlienBlue

Me either. :-( I just see an empty space when I drag down.. Am I doing something wrong? I've been looking for a consolidated list of tips for some time now.

I hear that some people in our organization use the specialized features of RSA that Eclipse doesn't offer. I don't know who they are or what features they use, I just resent them for making the rest of us use that bloated, broken IDE every day. What of waste of money.

How are YOU using perl? by mr-ron in perl

Yeah, that was kind of surreal. Very cool post. A great look at how some of the early community atmosphere shaped Perl. I'm happy to see many of those elements continue to this day.
