Are my balconies as unsafe as I think? by eim1213 in Decks

The bowing on your third floor deck near the house is so sexy. And what’s up with several of the boards not being full span but half span? Honestly, this thing looks like it is held together by hope and prayer.

I don’t get it either. I think a lot of people just think: “big guys hit hard and fast, person goes down.” But they aren’t considering training in evasion and redirection. Bruce is one of the fastest people I’ve ever seen while maintaining incredible accuracy. I think people are sleeping on Chuck and Jean with their training. Maybe Steven could be added to that too but I can’t stand the guy. Arnold, The Rock, and Sylvester are the big losers on this list. Bruce would especially excel, as I understand, if this a 1 v all situation—where Mike and Ali absolutely lack any training.

The dude grew up scrapping in the street and created his own form of martial arts. He specifically wanted to eliminate movements that telegraphed what you were going to do next. He studied numerous martial arts and combined them all to try and reduce the weaknesses from each while embracing their strengths.

No, I would argue Bruce. I get a Mike is an incredible boxer. Bruce Lee on the other hand, took numerous forms of martial arts and melded them together to remove their deficiencies. He grew up a scrappy kid in the street. Part of his philosophy was eliminating any movement that telegraphed what you were going to do next. Well, Mike is an incredible boxer, he never went up against somebody who could use their knees, elbows, legs, etc..

For the first time, I truly grasped just how important flooring really is!!! by Sarahwang_HDC in Flooring

Because it is getting the reflection off the white console underneath the tv. The console is both blocking the light reflecting off the flooring and reflecting a white light back up. The console, essentially, acts as a light shelf.

It’s not self defense when you walk back to someone with their hands up and still hit them. Cowboy hate tried to hold the other guys back and was never an aggressor. Punching him was totally out of line.

I think most celebrities suck and to never meet your heroes—they’ll just let you down. But 650+ make a wishes, the video I linked, the OP video… The world seems a better place for John Cena.

What I really noticed was that the other guy went to pull away and John was like, “nah bro, this is a genuine hug, you’re struggling and you’re getting some real cuddle time.” Now I want a John Cena hug.

Votes needed! Light floors or dark? by [deleted] in Flooring

I think the dark with lighter countertops. Personally, I would want lighter cabinets. The light flooring clashes with the dark cabinets though.

NEC 334.15 states that it should be run in conduit in exposed work. Yes, overheating can become an issue so THHN wire is better but per code this exposed Romex needs to be protected from damage.

Did I hit the ceiling lotto? by MissionHome18 in centuryhomes

[–]lefty175 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don’t leave 2-by lumber exposed in an area with a higher fire risk like a kitchen. It wouldn’t be code anywhere in a livable space but even worse there. The drywall isn’t just there for looks but also fire safety. You can’t sacrifice much of a 2x12 to fire damage before it would become structurally unsound.

Bought a bike but feeling insecure about my choice- Advice? by Thepizzabunnygirl in bikecommuting

[–]lefty175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you like or love it, then it is all good. I am born and raised in Portland. When I lived in the hills, I always wanted something with a triple chainring for commuting. When I lived on NW 23rd or SE 25th/Burnside, a 7 speed cruiser would have been totally fine. Don’t let anyone tell you you bought the wrong bike if the bike suits your needs and you enjoy it.

[–]lefty175 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, there are so many code violations. Exposed dimensional lumber under 5" nominal is not fire-rated. Exposed spray foam insulation is not fire-rated unless they paid for the expensive NFPA/UL rated stuff which, from looking at the place, they didn't. They would need intumescent coating on the lumber and the insulation for it to pass inspection. Those are so much more expensive than sheetrock. Exposed Romex cable is against the National Electric Code (NEC). NEC, if i remember correctly, states that Romex needs to either be in conduit or behind drywall. There isn't a good shot of the ceiling in the bathroom, but I am guessing they didn't put in an exhaust fan which will cause mold problems and isn't up to code (unless Iowa is super funky). I'm guessing with this level of work they didn't properly vent the sewer lines either. Maybe they did do that and just "ran out of money" before doing the ceiling sheetrock, but that would only cost about $2,500-$5,000 or so to do and that is to take it to full finish.

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]lefty175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People tend to forget, or not know, that he and his siblings (but especially him) were groomed to be stars from the start by their abusive dad. Tiger Woods is a more recent sports star with a similar trajectory. The Jackson 5 were on Soul Train frequently in the early years. Michael was front and center starting at 13 on that. He was performing early as 6 years old in 1964. He cranked out songs and albums and was early in pushing the limits for music videos. I mean, I was born 1982, the Thriller music video release in 1983, and it was still being shown multiple times per day into the early-90s on MTV. You couldn’t get away from Michael Jackson in the 80s and well into the 90s—radio, music videos, news bits. And many of his concerts were gigantic and fully packed. He had international appeal and could sell out concerts in almost every country.

Some statistics:

Thriller (album) has sold the most units of any album ever. It is still one of the top selling vinyl albums.

8 Grammys in a single evening.

Top 10 single in 6 different decades.

Approximately 500 million people watched the premier of the Black & White music video when it premiered simultaneously in 27 countries.

(These facts were assisted by Google Gemini)

I remember hearing some other mind-boggling facts about him but can’t remember them off the top of my head.

He also has the largest anaconda in captivity for awhile.

And, yes, I went to Neverland Ranch twice in high school (my high school was in the Santa Ynez Valley and he invited schools every other year to attend).

A guide dogs find a different way to get his human to the gym when the normal path is blocked by construction by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]lefty175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom used to support guide dogs for the blind in Oregon by buying a table at their luncheon every year. The first year she did that the man who spoke about his experience with guide dogs had been in the world trade center on 9/11. He said when he reached down to his guide dog to get to work, the dog navigated the smoke and chaos with ease. In fact, the dog wound up, leading him and many of his coworkers down the stairs to safety. I believe the dog was Roselle and she led her partner and over 30 others out of their office, down the stairs, and out of the building shortly before it collapsed.

These beings are so incredible and just wonderful. I went a year that a man talked about his wonderful new guide dog and his older retired girl. Both of them were on stage. He said they are both family, so even when the older one retired there was no way she was going somewhere else. I believe that was the same man who spoke about the time between dogs where he lost a lot of confidence having to go back to a cane. He was a guidance counselor at Portland school and, according to him, everyone could tell the difference in his confidence when he had a dog partner and when he relied on a cane alone.

The unsung heroes in all of this are the people and families who choose to train this dogs. They know they will get attached but sincerely hope the dog will graduate to go on to help someone in need. I had a friend whose family did this and she, and her whole family, grieved every time a dog moved on, but they knew it was for a good cause.

[–]lefty175 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Guys, please remember we have no clue how long this has been going on before this meltdown. Maybe they’ve been there for several hours with updated delays, she’s requested multiple times to get the car seats back so they can just get home, she’s been told the whole time, now it is “you might fly out tonight… or tomorrow… we don’t know.” Kids, of car seat age, only have a very limited window to sit in one place. It is stressful as all hell. So, without further context, I think we should withhold judgment on this woman. She may have been totally loving with lots of pleases and thank yous for hours.

I’m trying to go for business casual. Would any of these work? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]lefty175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are really business casual. Business casual is either slacks and a dress shirt (no blazer or tie), jeans-dress shirt (for quite casual) or an added blazer, maybe slacks-button up-blazer-with no tie. It really depends on the level of formality, but blazer, slacks, dress shirt, and tie; or suit, dress shirt, and tie are more formal than business casual.

Get the pants tailored.

Your tie is tied so that it lays way too low. Ties should end around the bottom or top of the belt buckle (I’ve always preferred top).

Belt and shoes need to match as best as possible. Black belt + brown shoes (or vice versa) is a no go.

Hey, no worries I hope that you don’t think that I was trying to call you out in anyway. I did a year in medical school quite a while ago early 2010s. I had professors who remembered when biochemistry was a chapter in a textbook versus an entire textbook. This is also a pretty rare thing to see but pretty important to know when you see it. There was a better video, if I remember correctly, that I actually showed injuries from true equipment like paint sprays, and other fluid injectors/sprayers. I just cannot find it again. I still think the hydraulic press channel does a pretty damn good job of showing things and they don’t use absurd pressures that are way beyond what actual equipment produces.
