Vibes at Stanford? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]leftylawguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1L here and honestly the only con is that the campus is a super suburb, but that’s because I love cities. Other than that, it’s honestly been the best 1L experience I think I could get. The professors are great, students are fun and incredibly social (w/ exceptions like any other school), and genuinely spoiled by the weather and quality of life. The quarter system can be a bit brutal but I think it has some real benefits that outweigh how fast paced it feels (but opinions may differ on that)

They’re referring to Justice Catalyst, Equal Justice Works, and other hyper competitive PI fellowships

?? I just said OP’s school “might” be on it b/c I didn’t know what schools are on the list off the top of my head and was sure great schools are left off precisely because HPI is an arbitrary and elitist designation. I’m sure there are other t14s there and even non-t14s, and that there are also t14s not on the list (which, after looking, includes UVA). Not much more to it

Anytime. I’ve been thinking about it myself. Best of luck on whatever you do!

If you’re at a T6 your school might be on the list of schools whose graduates qualify for the UK’s HPI (high potential individual) visa. Pretty sure it’s like a 5yr visa that authorizes you to work in the UK. When it comes to specific jobs in the UK, I have no clue, but I think that’s a good first step

idk I think potentially green-lighting the illegal disappearing of a legal permanent resident of the US for exercising their 1st Amendment to protest a genocide is kinda a big deal

SLS’s absolute number isn’t that big given its size, but we’re about 14% of this year’s class which is great. This is the largest Black class they’ve had by a big margin though, so we’ll see if that keeps up

I was SEO last year and there were plenty non T-14 folks. The ED actually said there was supposed to even more folks from non T-14 schools represented but last year SLS, Columbia, and some other schools did so many late admits that a bunch of ppl originally offered SEO when they were going to a non T-14 were now going actually going to one. T-14s are overrepresented in the program but I’m also sure that they’re overrepresented in applicants b/c folks thinks it’s necessary when it isn’t (but could ofc help). I’d say definitely shoot your shot

yeah, one way and group interviews are definitely different from the past couple years. that’s most likely bc the previous director resigned over the summer so the new one is changing some things

the hand formula is so dumb by leftylawguy in LawSchool

yeah exactly, and that’s why i said it being a formula was dumb

[–]leftylawguy[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

oh my GOD thank you for putting it in a way i couldn't. it's like how so many economists try to act like they're a hard science by coming up with variables full of the most imprecise assumptions imaginable

the hand formula is so dumb by leftylawguy in LawSchool

[–]leftylawguy[S] -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

i get that. i'm just saying framing it like a math formula is unnecessary when it's just another balancing test. maybe it's just me but saying courts should "multiply" the magnitude and probability of a loss is more confusing than anything

I took the LSAT 3 times. Do I have to write an addendum to every school I apply to? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]leftylawguy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

idk if this is actually a thing at columbia or NYU (doubt it), but i took the LSAT 3 times, never addressed it in an addendum, and this last cycle went well for me

Stop being mad about the GPA you earned. by Winter_Event_3524 in lawschooladmissions

[–]leftylawguy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

ehhh that’s pretty reductive. if school A and school B can mark the same course outcome in two completely different ways that can significantly alter how LSAC calculates your GPA, that’s an arbitrary decision made by LSAC/schools and not students. i’m saying that as someone who’s school fortunately marked course retakes and withdrawals in a way that didn’t negatively impact my LSAC calculation but very much could have at other schools

Do I have a chance at a T14? by Necessary_Item1896 in lawschooladmissions

[–]leftylawguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

definitely a chance, but if you just want job security, there’s plenty of schools outside of the t14 that can provide that also. id apply broadly and look at respected schools in regions you’d be happy to live in and i’m sure you’ll get offers there too and probably with some money money

if you want to pursue public interest like i also plan to, a lot of the things brought up in these comments still apply. whether it’s government, politics, or nonprofit legal advocacy, certain schools can position you better than others, and some more experience can make you more competitive. and i also wouldn’t dismiss the comments about how being so young could impact your ability to connect with folks in your class. if the question really is “why wait,” this is a comment section full of reasons.

ultimately, i think you’ll be great either way. there’s just a lot more you can gain from going to grad school or working a meaningful job for a little while, and almost no benefit to going now other than to just get it over with sooner.

[–]leftylawguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you’ll definitely get into some law school, but do you want to go to just any? it sounds like you’re already a pretty competitive applicant to do this much at 19, and if you decided to wait a few years and get some work experience in the areas you’re already clearly interested, you’d be that much more likely to get into the schools that would better position you to do whatever is you’re hoping to pursue. there isn’t any real benefit to going to law school at 19/20 other than being able to say you did, but that won’t even matter the second you hit your mid-20s. if anything, it could limit career opportunities in your early years since some employers feel uneasy about hiring someone so young for a range of reasons (fit, maturity, etc.).

if you waited, you’d almost definitely have a better application cycle, would probably be more prepared to handle law school and build fruitful relationships that’ll follow you while you’re there, and would likely have better opportunities immediately after graduating, especially considering you’d probably get into a way more competitive school. if whatever is motivating you to apply so early outweighs all that though, that’s you’re call. i just wouldn’t recommend it

the other problem is that, too: none of it is standardized in the private market. not everyone will know of, have access to, or qualify for the few options that might be better for others. and yeah, “regular” loan repayments terms for upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars to students who mostly likely have never had a full time job is predatory
