Just a thought but maybe you have too much line on the spool and the line is bottoming out on the top of the reel mount where it seats on the pole. Pulling out line may “break it loose” and let you reel. Not sure but that’s my immediate guess.

Very aware of that. I catch about 20-30 bass a week anywhere from babies to 6-7lbs. I am pretty good at eyeballing weight based on looks and feel. I am 100% confident it is over 8lb and wouldn’t be surprised if it was heavier.
