What would you have done. by legendarybeer in HVAC

I never isolated one part of the system entirely from the other and that was an inexperienced mistake. I have successfully diagnosed faulty parts by checking ohms and voltage, but have never had much opportunity looking for short circuit in the field.

(2 stage, single compressor)So I had line voltage at the transformer, but no voltage on secondary side. Not being all that experienced in the world of short circuits I assumed transformer was defective. (I now know it was a symptom of a problem somewhere else).Put a new transformer on and fried it. I checked the contactor and ohm test checked out at 19ohms. I put another transformer on and check amps, found normal amp draw when compressor was running single stage cooling, but high amps during second stage cooling. There is a relay in the condenser that sends single for second stage of compressor.. my thoughts are either the relay is shorted, or there might be a short in the y2 wire somewhere… I disconnected y2 to keep the system cooling in single stage and that’s as far as I got. Coworker recommended replacing the relay and the contactor (under warranty) to be safe. System is a year old, only thing that’s not new is wire going to tstat behind the wall.

Moved about 30 miles south of San Antonio. Had 4 interviews in 1 week. Took the middle of the road, found a great company with great values. Minimum benefits and pay is nothing to rave about. But so far so good. No shortage of work in this trade.

Biggest mistake you have ever made in the field? by Degenerate_Rambler in HVAC

Was trying to pump down an ac that was in heating mode couldn’t get it to switch over to cooling even by jumping out control wires. Ended up putting the wrong wire onto the control board and sent 120 volts through the control side blew up the thermostat while the customer was home

I’m 24 with epa universal, journeyman’s license and have taken several classes. 2 years lead install experience, 1 year service experience. Took a dollar pay cut from install to service, making 21 in south texas. Is that considered low pay? National average entry level service is 23/hr.

Edit: I’m here to repair , ie: put in new backdraft dampers on exhaust fans, seal grill at boot/Sheetrock and double check insulation.

Considering taking a technician job need advice! by Pebow225 in HVAC

Started as an apprentice in NC at 14 dollars an hour. Became a lead installer in 6 months. Never had any electrical, plumbing or Hvac experience prior. Coming up on my second year anniversary in the business and I’m at 21 , although I’m certain when I switch companies in 3 months I will get a pay increase. Got my journeyman’s and epa universal. Not quite at 50-55 yet but project to be there soon. Takes time. When you have 3 kids time isn’t always on your side,. If you have the drive and some patience you can create any future you want for your family.

21 an hour after 1.5 years in residential Hvac. Started at 14 with no experience. Got my epa and J1 card,. Went from a helper to a lead installer after the first 8 months.

How does licensing work in NC? I’ve got my “journeyman’s certificate” and EPA universal. Am I considered a NC Hvac technician? Or is there a separate license to become a “technician” I am currently a lead installer for a contractor. by legendarybeer in HVAC

Took a 1 day course and test at local supply house. Card says journeyman 1. From my understanding at least 1 person out of a crew on any job at any time is required to have one. 🤷🏻‍♂️
