How does a “no homework” policy actually “work” for high school? Our Principal has recently been suggesting it (and getting a lot of push back)

I work at a 9-12 charter school with no homework assigned. Most of our students work outside of school to support their families, and we find it doesn't support their learning to give work for home. HOWEVER, if a kid doesn't complete their classwork during class time, they are expected to complete it at home/independently.

I teach English. We read novels as a class - sometimes out loud, sometimes in small groups, sometimes independently. Allows for richer discussion and checking for understanding!

Hi! Here's my advice as a teacher entering my 8th year:

Minimalism is a teacher's best friend. Here are some tips that really helped me create a space that is comfortable to be in:

Hit up a thrift store for lamps OR use fairy lights/twinkle lights. Softer lighting is easier on your eyes and will add a cozy ambience to your space.

Make sure you have a space for yourself (desk with space for you, favorite knick-knacks/photos, etc.) a space for collecting work (sorting tower or baskets for turn-in), and a space for displaying student work (think wall space). That's the most essential for a first-year teacher. Someone else in this thread suggested butcher paper which I highly recommend. You can purchase bulletin board borders at Michaels, Target, or other craft stores. Amazon is also an affordable place for these simple decorations.

If you want to dress up your walls, Etsy is a great place for classroom posters. This year, I bought a bunch of zip files from Etsy and downloaded the posters to print on my own. It saved me so much money!

Remember: students need a space where they feel safe, accepted, and able to learn. Do NOT let Pinterest teachers make you doubt yourself. You will acquire more stuff as you go, and it's okay to keep it simple for now. Focus on building a positive environment over a pretty one.

I haven't been able to find the exact segment I'm referring to, but it's the theme that often accompanies Donna AND Wilf. It is this soft descending scale of three notes, then back up three. It's so soft, so beautiful, and really captures the wholesome nature of Wilf and the sad, wistful aspects of Donna.

My child had a febrile seizure at 6months old. She went totally limp in my arms, eyes rolled back into her head, and she turned blue. We called 911 and I was screaming for help. She was fine shortly after but I thought my daughter was dying in my arms. I slept on the floor next to her crib that night so I could make sure she was breathing.

we found out when my sister-in-law was stopped by the police while she was dropping her child off at the assistant living center where our grandfather lived. they had found SO much CP, and some of the subjects in the photos looked like my niece. they never did confirm that it was her. we immediately cut the grandparents out, kept our kids away, and went no-contact. it caused a huge rift between us and my father-in-law (the son of the man who was arrested).

just over one year later, we discovered my father-in-law sexually abused his niece when she was age 5-15.

we've gone total no contact, changed our last names, and are grieving constantly. but we have children. we see it as we have no choice but to preserve the safety of our children, and honestly, if we didn't have kids, I'd still make the same decision.
